Yeah, I think that once he raises your river bet, you have to just call. Okay, he might just be pushing trip queens, but (1) a lot of players with trips will just call fearing the flush, and (2) if you 3-bet, it's VERY unlikely that anything less than a boat will cap it, so you gain 1 bet against trips but lose 2 to a boat.
For what it's worth, I don't think you were wrong to call on the turn despite the paired board. Sure, you may be drawing dead (and were in this case), but most of the time you'll easily have enough live outs to make that call.
