At least we all agree I overplayed the river (and perhaps turn).

Big mistakes are characterized by ones that cost you many bets or occur often. If I didn't improve on the turn, I'd fold. I would have lost 1 SB there. If my improvement still made me a second best hand, I'd lose 3-5 BBs (assuming I don't overplay it like here). If I folded when I had the odds to continue, I would have lost more than 12 BBs.

Just because this time he had KK doesn't mean in the majority of situations the PFR will have AA, KK, or AK here. And those are the only situations where I would improve to a second best hand. Only 2% of his possible raising hands include AA, KK, AKo, and AKs. There's at least another 5% he'd raise in that position (I'd raise another 10% in that position - so this is quite the conservative estimate). And because the flop has both an A and K, there were less aces and kings dealt to players making it even less likely he has AA, KK, or AKo/s.

EscapePlan,
I understand you are getting 9:1 on the flop, but there is also the possibility that you could have been caught up in a check raise from one of the two late position players. I personally don't think you caught enough of this flop to continue with the hand. If you flopped a 4-flush along with your paired 8 or the board was less coordinated then perhaps peeling one off might have been ok. Dunno, maybe I'm too tight here.

You said: "Given 9:1 on the flop, it's an easy call with my trip outs, two pair outs, and backdoor flush draw. With both the A and K out there, it's less likely he holds exactly AA, KK, or AK. I didn't call the flop because I thought I was ahead. He could easily be raising with AQ or AJ, or even KQ or KJ. If I didn't catch an 8, 5, or heart on the turn, I'd fold."
The flop call is more complicated than just saying you are getting 9:1 to call with 6 outs (1 for BDflush draw)to improve.

--The board is 2 tone, so 2 of your six potential outs must be discounted, and even if those 2 outs are clean, it will often set up a strong redraw.

--While you can't always fear AA,KK, or AK in this spot, you cannot dismiss them. A not insignificant percentage of the time you are drawing to running hearts.

--Even if you are drawing live against a Ace (or a K) and hit, those hands are going to outdraw you on the river fairly often (usually 8 outs)

--If you hit a non diamont 5 or 8, you can still be outdrawn by a flush draw.

--you are not closing the action, and it would suck to get raised behind you.

There are a lot of negative factors to consider before peeling in this spot. I would like a premium to proceed and I don't think 9:1 is enough.

--Fred
