A few things here regarding stuff that I have and haven't observed at my tables:
I guess the main one is whether people like the flop or not. I really do like looking at people's eyes (whether or not I'm in the pot) as the flop comes out, and before looking at it myself. I just don't see Caro's tell of the quick glance at chips, which of course isn't to say that some people do it.
But, against players I know, I do get a very definite sense of whether they like the flop or not. It's hard to put my finger on it, more just a feeling--perhaps they kind of puff up a little bit or their breathing changes, but it is very definitely possible to see how they like the flop. I'm hoping I can get a lot better on this one but felt like I was doing pretty well tonight, particularly when not in a hand (in a hand, I have a tendency to think a lot about my own betting sometimes, if the flop hits me in one way or another, so it definitely does distract me from being fully attentive to the reactions of others).
As a variation on Johnny's suggestion of studying the board: Kind of looking back and forth from the board to the players in the hand isn't bad at all, I think. I'm probably a little too nonchalant when the flop completely misses me--not really a horrible tell, but, by reverse inference, I know that the more perceptive players do know that when my brain starts working, something is getting ready to happen--giving them an opportunity to checkraise big hands or let me bet for them (as actually happened night before last).
I'm going to put another Caro tell that sounds very interesting (no empirical data yet, unfortunately) in a separate thread.Statistics: Posted by Aisthesis — Thu Jun 30, 2005 12:21 am
