KK against a tight/aggressive opponent

Postby briachek » Sat Feb 05, 2005 1:20 am

Opponent was tight, VPIP was less than 15%, so I was concerned on this hand

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [Kc], [Kd]. CO posts a blind of $2.
1 fold, UTG+1 raises, 3 folds, CO (poster) calls, Hero 3-bets, BB calls, UTG+1 caps, CO calls, Hero calls, BB calls.

Ok, he capped so Its likely he's got a big pocket pair, possibly AK but not as likely.

Flop: (16.50 SB) [4s], [9d], [9c] (5 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 bets, CO calls, Hero raises, BB folds, UTG+1 3-bets, CO calls, Hero calls.

He might be overplaying AK, but I doubt it. He's on JJ (not so likely), QQ, KK also, or AA. Its smelling like AA. I can't put him on a 9 and the CO was a calling station and a maniac in one. He would call with any draw and go nuts with any part of the flop so I don't put him on a 9 or he would have raised. What do you do from now on? I chose to check call this hand down.

Turn: (12.75 BB) [Jh] (4 players)
UTG+1 bets, CO calls, Hero calls.

If he had JJ, he hit payday.

River: (15.75 BB) [7c] (4 players)
UTG+1 bets, CO calls, Hero calls.

no change here.

Final Pot: 18.75 BB

Results in white below:
SB has 2h 5d (one pair, nines).
UTG+1 has Qs Qc (two pair, queens and nines).
CO has 2s Js (two pair, jacks and nines).
Hero has Kc Kd (two pair, kings and nines).
Outcome: Hero wins 18.75 BB.

Any comments on the play? Would anyone have laid this down at any point? Put in 4 bets on flop or raise turn?

I think you played it just fine. After a capped flop by a good tight agressive player and then a three bet of your raise on flop I am just calling him down and prepared to look at AA but I am not folding KK with this board.

i think u lost some bets. i think a good, agressive player would call a raise on the flop and look for a check raise on the big bet if he held aces. by continuing to raise on the flop i think it indicates the player holds a overpair but a vulnerable overpair and wants to hopefully thin the field. then, on the turn, when utg+1 bets and the orginal raiser only calls, i think u should raise. u cant always fear a set or aces.

I would agree with Piers if you were heads up, I think. But, since you have a bad calling station in the pot, I would have capped the flop and raised the turn.
