Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (10 handed)

Preflop: ME is UTG+2 with [8h], [8s].
UTG calls, UTG+1 folds, ME calls, MP1 calls, MP2 folds, MP3 calls, CO folds, Button calls, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: (7 SB) [8c], [Td], [3c] (7 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, ME checks, MP1 checks, MP3 checks, Button checks.

Turn: (3.50 BB) [Js] (7 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG bets, ME raises, MP1 folds, MP3 calls, Button folds, SB folds, BB folds, UTG calls.

River: (9.50 BB) [5d] (3 players)
UTG checks, ME bets, MP3 folds, UTG calls.

Final Pot: 11.50 BB

Results in white below:
UTG has Jd Kh (one pair, jacks).
ME has 8h 8s (three of a kind, eights).
Outcome: ME wins 11.50 BB.

I usually bet my baby sets fast after the flop, but decided to do this passive, because I thought someone behind me would bet it. And then, I think I should've just called on the turn, because my raise drove out the others acting after me.

UGH. Still kicking myself over this one.

Thoughts? Or did I just sum it up perfectly?

(Also, I KNOW calling 88 UTG is a pretty poor play as well, but this table was loose and VERY passive.)
If you're gonna play trash, expect it to get taken out.

(I hate those people who quote themselves, but that's one of my original lines).

I don't mind your call in this position with one person already in with a loose passive table as you are looking ot pick up one more caller and probably the SB at least. I think you should have bet the flop in your position and given someone behind you the chance to raise. There are only two callers behind you and that is not exactly a board that entices a bet unless someone is pretty strong. There is also a flush draw and straight draw out there so you are likely to get callers if you go ahead and lead out.

I like your raise on the turn because there is a 4 straight out there as well as a slight two pair possibility. You need to make any 9 pay the maximum to draw at you.

There are definately many times to check a set on the flop and hope for action behind you but with this flop I don't think it was one of those times. The cards were all pretty low and the flush possibilty was out there. Many people will call you here on the flop with overcards and that is wonderful. Lead out and let's say an A hits the turn. Now you can check and let that pair of aces bet and then raise everyone for two bets on the turn. I make this play many times with a small set and a low board hoping that someone is calling with overs and if an overcard hits I will check and hope to trap them for two big bets.

STILL kicking myself about not betting the flop. This is the first set I've attempted to slow play in at least three months. UGH.

You're right, people would've called since that flop was not scary at all. UGH. Worst case someone thinks I have straight draw or A8.

UGH.

Can't wait to get off work in 8 hours for another sesison.

thanks piers.

Well, just got finished playing for four hours and I could play another four, but I'm quitting now. Had a great run, which I needed, because yesterday was awful. And I didn't play bad yesterday, either, just one of those days. Had wired Aces SEVEN times yesterday and I lost six of them!

I present to you the following hand, nearly a duplicate of the one above, but played MUCH MUCH better!

(The TERRIBLES are the same ones from the other thread, "A good laydown?" TERRIBLE 2 had just busted out, and this is just a mere six hands after the hand in the other thread).

Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with [6h], [6c].
Hero calls, UTG+1 folds, MP1 folds, MP2 folds, MP3 calls, CO (TERRIBLE 4) calls, Button (TERRIBLE 3) calls, SB (TERRIBLE 1) completes, BB checks.

Flop: (6 SB) [5s], [6d], [2s] (6 players)
TERRIBLE 1 checks, BB checks, Hero bets, MP3 calls, TERRIBLE 4 raises, TERRIBLE 3 calls, TERRIBLE 1 calls, BB calls, Hero 3-bets, MP3 folds, TERRIBLE 4 caps, TERRIBLE 3 calls, TERRIBLE 1 calls, BB calls, Hero calls.

Turn: (13.50 BB) [5d] (5 players)
TERRIBLE 1 checks, BB checks, Hero bets, TERRIBLE 4 calls, TERRIBLE 3 folds, TERRIBLE 1 calls, BB folds.

River: (16.50 BB) [2h] (3 players)
TERRIBLE 1 bets, Hero raises, TERRIBLE 4 3-bets, TERRIBLE 1 caps, Hero calls, TERRIBLE 4 calls.

Final Pot: 28.50 BB

Results in white below:
TERRIBLE 1 has 5c Kh (full house, fives full of twos).
Hero has 6h 6c (full house, sixes full of fives).
TERRIBLE 4 has Qs 6s (two pair, sixes and fives).
Outcome: Hero wins 28.50 BB.

After TERRIBLE 4 3-bet the river, I was scared shitless she had deuces!

Isn't it too bad the cap is at 4 bets? It should be higher at Party Poker, but they would lose many customers too quickly.

Yep, well played set. Terrible 4 seems to have a problem...a stuck raise button. That was impressive, three betting there w/ three pair.
