A good lay down?

Postby phatlad » Mon Jan 24, 2005 4:31 am

I'm getting better in this last week since joining here and with the purchase of PokerTracker.

I don't think I would've laid the following hand down on the turn before this week: (Crazy table ahead, VP$IP was more than 60%) TERRIBLE 1 lasted just one orbit. TERRIBLE 2 lasted less than 20 hands. TERRIBLE 3 and TERRIBLE 4 both were over 70 percent VP$IP.

Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (10 handed)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [Kc], [Ks].
UTG raises, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 (TERRIBLE 4) calls, MP1 (TERRIBLE 3) calls, MP2 (TERRIBLE 2) calls, MP3 folds, CO (TERRIBLE 1) calls, Hero 3-bets, SB folds, BB folds, UTG calls, UTG+2 (TERRIBLE 4) calls, MP1 (TERRIBLE 3) calls, MP2 (TERRIBLE 2) calls, CO (TERRIBLE 1) caps, Hero calls, UTG calls, UTG+2 (TERRIBLE 4) calls, MP1 (TERRIBLE 3) calls, MP2 (TERRIBLE 2) calls.

Flop: (25.50 SB) [8c], [6h], [6d] (6 players)
UTG checks, TERRIBLE 4 bets, TERRIBLE 3 calls, TERRIBLE 2 calls, TERRIBLE 1 raises, Hero calls, UTG folds, TERRIBLE 4 calls, TERRIBLE 3 calls, TERRIBLE 2 3-bets, TERRIBLE 1 caps, Hero calls, TERRIBLE 4 calls, TERRIBLE 3 calls, TERRIBLE 2 calls.

Turn: (22.75 BB) [7c] (5 players)
TERRIBLE 4 checks, TERRIBLE 3 bets, TERRIBLE 2 calls, TERRIBLE 1 raises, Hero folds, TERRIBLE 4 calls, TERRIBLE 3 calls, TERRIBLE 2 calls.

River: (30.75 BB) [9d] (4 players)
TERRIBLE 4 checks, TERRIBLE 3 checks, TERRIBLE 2 checks, TERRIBLE 1 checks.

Final Pot: 30.75 BB

Results in white below:
TERRIBLE 4 has 4c 4h (two pair, sixes and fours).
TERRIBLE 3 has 5c 5h (straight, nine high).
TERRIBLE 2 has 6s Ad (three of a kind, sixes).
TERRIBLE 1 has Qd Ah (one pair, sixes).
Outcome: TERRIBLE 3 wins 30.75 BB.

My question here is: Do I lay this down sooner? I knew if a King came on the turn though, I'd be sitting damn pretty. I think I played it correctly given all the damn action.
If you're gonna play trash, expect it to get taken out.

I'd have 3-bet the flop, rather than just calling. Someone's going to have to make me believe they have a 6 or AA. I probably would have folded in the same place, since terrible 3 comes alive on the turn and terrible 1 still raises. It's important to call down in big pots if you can do so cheaply and there's a small chance you're still ahead, but with a couple guys going to war I think you have to cut your losses.

That pot is so large you have the correct odds to see the turn with no problems. I might even chase the river given a 2 outer to the boat given the pot at that point. You would have easily called the turn if it had not been raised, getting better than 22:1 to do so, and even raised you were getting 13:1 to make the call, with implied odds even better.

You could be reasonably sure someone held a 6, and the turn makes a straight possible, but a K on the river gives you the nuts barring 66 and a truly huge pot.

Folding at any time before the turn would have been a mistake. And no one would find fault with you chasing the river if you had done so.

The only real mistake you could have made would have been to chase the river and put money in the pot if no K showed up.

Some pretty good advice from Norton and Jim there. I strongly concur with Norton that you need to 3 bet the flop. I would have laid it down also on the turn facing 2 bets there. Sounds like a pretty sweet table if you ever hit a hand solid.
