Starting at Limit - a few questions to the long timers

Postby jdavidk » Thu Aug 18, 2005 8:45 am

I am getting back to Limit Hold Em again, I started off playing Limit 3 years ago and then started playing a lot of SNG's and NLHE Tournaments and I have decided to go back to my roots, sort a say.

Anyways, what I have been doing is playing a SNG on Bugsys Site and focusing most of my attention there while I have a 2/4 Limit page open. I have been somewhat following piersmajestyk suggestions on how to make money a the Limit Holdem tables but I keep finding myself loosening up as time goes by so I am working on that. My questions are as follows:

How long should I plan on staying at a table? I swear I was at a table last night and did not get a playable hand for the first hour. Is that normal?

Should I leave a table after winning 3 or 4 big pots?

Since I am going to be playing such straight forward poker should I play two tables at a time?

FYI – My bankroll is about $250 right now

I chose for my bankroll to be at $250 - It was actually around $500 and I took some money out to buy a new monitor and to transfer to another site. My plan is to get it up to $400 and then just take out anything over that. I have no desire to move up in limits, I just want to make some extra cash.

With only a $250 bankroll, I'd stick with 1/2 at most to start. When you get closer to $400, then moving to 2/4 would be "okay".

WIth straight-forward play - especially as tight as Piers recommends - you will be folding around 85% of your hands. That's about 15 hands per 100 hands dealt. Usually the hands dealt per hour is around 70, so I'd estimate you see around 10-12 hands per hour. My point? It's VERY easy to multi-table with such tight play. Plus, playing at 3 or 4 tables at once will give you plenty of action so you don't start playing marginal hands out of boredom.

Still, if you're not too familiar with limit play, I'd stick with two tables to start. Then move up to 3 or 4 tables when you're comfortable.

When 3 or 4 tabling, I sometimes am on one table where I only found 9/90 hands to be playable (and I play looser than Piers). On another table, I might play 20/100 hands. So yes, there will definitely be times you catch cold cards. It's perfectly normal.

Usually if you're winning big pots on a table that means you're playing well there. Don't leave just because "you're up". Leaving because you're losing focus, have too much on your mind, are hungry or tired, etc, is fine. But not just because you're up!

$500 isn't enough for 2/4, unless you're comfortable with the idea that you may have to reload if you go on a bad run.

You should stay at a table as long as
*the table is good
*you are playing your 'A' game
*you want to keep playing
