Was this a stupid play for me preflop?

Postby phatlad » Wed Jan 19, 2005 8:02 pm

I'm thinking, you have ask if it's stupid, it probably is.

Observed the table I was at for three orbits. Some players were already in my database, BIG FISH was not, but his stack dropped from $60 to under $30 in those three orbits. He was seeing 70 percent of the flops and was very passive post flop. MR. MCTIGHT's (who also was running PT as we chatted in the room after the following hand) VP$iP is around 14 percent, and he's raising 60 percent of the times he decides to play preflop.

Just bought PT last night, and I've made money from every positoin but BB and SB and found out I fold my BB to preflop raises more than 90 percent of the time. So much for defending the blinds, eh?

Anyway, as follows:

Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: ME is BB with [Ad], [8d].
UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, MP1 calls, MP2 (BIG FISH) calls, MP3 calls, CO (Mr. McTight) raises, Button folds, SB calls, ME calls, MP1 calls, MP2 (BIG FISH) 3-bets, MP3 caps, CO (Mr. McTight) calls, SB calls, ME calls, MP1 calls, MP2 (BIG FISH) calls.

Flop: (24 SB) [Ah], [8s], (6 players)
SB checks, ME bets, MP1 folds, BIG FISH calls, MP3 calls, Mr. McTight raises, SB folds, ME 3-bets, BIG FISH caps, MP3 calls, Mr. McTight calls, ME calls.

Turn: (20 BB) [Jd] (4 players)
ME bets, BIG FISH calls, MP3 calls, Mr. McTight raises, ME calls, BIG FISH calls, MP3 calls.

River: (28 BB) [9d] (4 players)
ME bets, BIG FISH calls, MP3 calls, Mr. McTight raises, ME 3-bets, BIG FISH calls, MP3 folds, Mr. McTight calls.

Final Pot: 38 BB

Results in white below:
ME has Ad 8d (flush, ace high).
BIG FISH has Ac Qd (straight, queen high).
Mr. McTight has Kc Qh (straight, ace high).
Outcome: ME wins 38 BB.

I put McTight on KK, him raising preflop with KQo threw me. Wasn't really concerned with BigFish, because he was a dadgum calling station.

Brutal critiques welcomed.

Thanks guys, and bria, that was my thinking, too. Tight player raises, I figured I'm basically hoping for a flush draw on the flop.

When he raised post-flop, for a second he might have had wired Aces or hit a set of Ts.

He said after the hand he put me on two pair but no flush draw, which means he thought I had AT. With my passive preflop play, I could see why he'd think that.

I'm a sucker for a flush, and hands like this, unfortunately, drive me away from changing that mentality. Obviously I toss it preflop if it's unsuited.

I'm not sure, but I think Mr. Tight raises anytime he has two face cards or an ace and a face. Was just praying he didn't have [Kd][Qd]!

if he raises with any two faces cards or any ace with a face, he isn't as tight as he should be. He could get in a lot of trouble like that, especially if he is raise all the time with AJ, but more so with QJ, KJ and KQ. These are easily dominated hands and you can take him for some serious pots later when he overplays his weaker hands again. Especially if he is capping with marginally raisable hands like KQ (as you can see, he was dominated by big fish and out flopped by you AND big fish).

On both calls it looks like you're getting 11:1, so you should definitely call if you will lay it down when you only hit the ace.

McTight plays his hands way too aggressively. Raising KQ after a couple of EP limpers is not a good move, and trying to represent the ace against 5 opponents is dumb. This is a great table though -- he actually had odds to draw to the inside straight because of all the callers, even when it was two bets to him.

Play of the hand...

Postby nothumb » Fri Jan 21, 2005 1:50 am

Preflop:

The first call is easy when it is 1 bet back to you. The second call is a fold for some players but with so many in the pot I would probably play, especially if my read on the fish is that he is overly aggressive with hands like middle pairs, suited faces, etc. Note that he limp-reraised which often means an inferior suited hand or something else decent. Bad players make this play hoping for action without really understanding if they have good multiway hands.

From the flop on, fine.

The tight player did not play his hand nearly as poorly as others think, BTW. The worst play he made was the cap pre-flop. The river raise is probably the next worst.

On the flop, his raise is a justifiable free card play given that he has a gutshot to the nuts and you bet after just calling preflop. At this limit he can realistically hope to see the river for free, although with so much action pre-flop I would probably think twice before attempting this.

On the turn, he has the mortal nuts. On the river, it's hard to put you on a runner-runner flush when you were so aggressive on the flop. Really, A8 of diamonds is the ONLY hand a thinking player could fear from you here - with the action so far you are way more likely to hold something like TT, 88, or even another KQ.

I don't like the turn bet at all. You have every reason to suspect a set or bigger 2-pair at this point and you should be backing off into check-call mode. Calling a raise is okay, even if 3-bet and capped behind you given you have outs to both a boat and the nut-flush, but betting out was wrong IMO.

The river is almost as dicey. The only hand that can beat you is KdQd, and no one has given you reason to suspect that except MP3 who has been quietly calling along ever since he pre-flop cap. But I can't really find fault with betting out here, especially since MP3 folded. I would have been surprised to see the straight-flush in any other hand.
