Why I hate limit now

Postby briachek » Fri Jul 15, 2005 9:05 pm

Monk's been doing all the bitching lately so its my turn.

Here is a rundown of a session I had on Pokerstars to show why I hate limit now. This will be a long post with many hands but this has happened to me the past 3 sessions. WTF?

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is SB with [Kc], [Js].
7 folds, Hero completes, BB raises, Hero calls.

Flop: (4 SB) [8c], [2s], [5h] (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, Hero raises, BB calls.

Turn: (4 BB) [Jh] (2 players)
Hero bets, BB raises, Hero 3-bets, BB caps, Hero calls.

River: (12 BB) [Th] (2 players)
Hero bets, BB calls.

Final Pot: 14 BB

Results in white below:
BB has Kh Kd (one pair, kings).
Hero has Kc Js (one pair, jacks).
Outcome: BB wins 14 BB.

A semi typical blind battle. I decide he likely didn't hit the flop so I checkraise him. Then I hit a great card for me (or so I thought) and ran with it. Sucks to be me.

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (10 handed)

Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with [8c], [8d].
1 fold, Hero calls, 7 folds, BB checks.

Flop: (2.50 SB) [Th], [Kd], [8s] (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB folds.

Final Pot: 1.75 BB

Results in white below:
No showdown. Hero wins 1.75 BB.

Table was passive so I thought I could limp with this and see a cheap flop. Of course, no action.

Meanwhile, I get small pocket pairs in EP 3 times and have to fold as They are on aggressive tables so I just get out of the way. I get sets with all of them and would have won huge pots. Once again, good cards and bad timing.

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (10 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [Td], [Th].
8 folds, SB completes, Hero raises, SB calls.

Flop: (4 SB) [8c], [Qd], [9s] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, SB calls.

Turn: (3 BB) [Kd] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks.

River: (3 BB) [8h] (2 players)
SB bets, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 5 BB

Results in white below:
SB has 9h 8s (full house, eights full of nines).
Hero has Td Th (two pair, tens and eights).
Outcome: SB wins 5 BB.

This hand looks bad but this guy was a complete muppet who oveplayed every hand and saw the showdown 50% of the time with ace high and such. I guess he wanted to checkraise me on the turn but I let him down.

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (8 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [7c], [Kc].
3 folds, MP2 calls, CO calls, 2 folds, Hero checks.

Flop: (3.50 SB) [7s], [9h], [Ks] (3 players)
Hero checks, MP2 bets, CO calls, Hero raises, MP2 folds, CO calls.

Turn: (4.25 BB) [9d] (2 players)
Hero bets, CO calls.

River: (6.25 BB) [3c] (2 players)
Hero checks, CO checks.

Final Pot: 6.25 BB

Results in white below:
CO has Kd Ad (two pair, kings and nines).
Hero has 7c Kc (two pair, kings and nines).
Outcome: CO wins 6.25 BB.

I hit from the bb finally and this is what I get. I bet the turn and hope he's not interested but I just go screwed over.

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is CO with [Ac], [Ah].
UTG calls, UTG+1 calls, 3 folds, Hero raises, 2 folds, BB calls, UTG calls, UTG+1 calls.

Flop: (8.50 SB) [7d], [4s], [Kc] (4 players)
BB checks, UTG checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero bets, BB calls, UTG folds, UTG+1 calls.

Turn: (5.75 BB) [Qh] (3 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero bets, BB raises, UTG+1 folds, Hero calls.

River: (9.75 BB) [Qs] (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 11.75 BB

Results in white below:
BB has 4c 4h (full house, fours full of queens).
Hero has Ac Ah (two pair, aces and queens).
Outcome: BB wins 11.75 BB.

Sometimes I dread getting big pocket pairs.

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (7 handed)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with [Td], [Th].
UTG raises, Hero 3-bets, 1 fold, CO calls, 3 folds, UTG calls.

Flop: (10.50 SB) [2c], [9c], [8c] (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets, CO calls, UTG calls.

Turn: (6.75 BB) [Tc] (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets, CO calls, UTG folds.

River: (8.75 BB) [3s] (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 10.75 BB

Results in white below:
Hero has Td Th (three of a kind, tens).
CO has Ac Jd (flush, ace high).
Outcome: CO wins 10.75 BB.

Calling this down was a mistake I guess but I just like how the poker gods decided to mess with me by giving me a set to complete the 4 card flush.

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (8 handed)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with [Kh], [Kd].
2 folds, MP1 calls, Hero raises, 3 folds, BB calls, MP1 calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) [Ac], [9h], [9d] (3 players)
BB checks, MP1 checks, Hero bets, BB calls, MP1 folds.

Turn: (4.25 BB) [3c] (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks.

River: (4.25 BB) [Ks] (2 players)
BB bets, Hero raises, BB calls.

Final Pot: 8.25 BB

Results in white below:
BB has Ts As (two pair, aces and nines).
Hero has Kh Kd (full house, kings full of nines).
Outcome: Hero wins 8.25 BB.

One suckout for the good guy. If he raised me at anypoint, I was gone.

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [7c], [4c].
4 folds, MP3 calls, CO calls, Button calls, SB completes, Hero checks.

Flop: (5 SB) [9c], [2c], [Ac] (5 players)
SB bets, Hero raises, MP3 folds, CO folds, Button calls, SB calls.

Turn: (5.50 BB) [Ad] (3 players)
SB bets, Hero raises, Button calls, SB 3-bets, Hero calls, Button calls.

River: (14.50 BB) [3c] (3 players)
SB bets, Hero folds, Button calls.

Final Pot: 16.50 BB

Results in white below:
SB has 9h Ah (full house, aces full of nines).
Button has 6c Tc (flush, ace high).
Outcome: SB wins 16.50 BB.

This hand was just a kick inthe nuts as I was drawing to runner runner straight flush on the flop. Not only do I flop a flush, but the board pairs, a 4th of the suit hits AND someone flopped a higher flush.

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (8 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [Kd], [Jc].
1 fold, UTG+1 calls, 4 folds, SB completes, Hero checks.

Flop: (3 SB) [Jh], [5h], [Kh] (3 players)
SB bets, Hero raises, UTG+1 3-bets, SB calls, Hero calls.

Turn: (6 BB) [Qs] (3 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, UTG+1 bets, SB calls, Hero raises, UTG+1 3-bets, SB folds, Hero calls.

River: (13 BB) [5c] (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 bets, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 15 BB

Results in white below:
Hero has Kd Jc (two pair, kings and jacks).
UTG+1 has Ah 6h (flush, ace high).
Outcome: UTG+1 wins 15 BB.

This was out of frustration I guess. No way could he have flopped the flush! Either way, I have 4 outs! Pokerstars is just fucking with me hard now.

Somehow I managed to finish only down $55 but I completed the bonus there so I lost about $70 chasing that bonus. Another kick to the nuts. My testicles can't keep taking this. I don't know how TW does it.

Bri--

In the last 3 weeks, I've lost 35% of my remaining roll (took out 2k to buy the missus a diamond tennis bracelet for the wedding) playing 2/4 and 3/6.

I need a break. Sounds like you do too.

I also forgot about an AK hand where I raised and was cold called by 2 players including KJs. Of course the flop was ATx with 2 of his suit that he catches on the river and I check/call his bet. It seems that I don't really get paid on my big hands and my hand like that always have draws out there that hit people.

It's been that way for 3+ weeks for me now.

I had built up my roll from $50 on Stars, then from $100 to $450 on UB, moved that back to Stars, and built it up in 3+ months to $2400.

I withdrew $1800 to pay for the bracelet (could've got myself a WSOP one for that price), then bulit that $600 or so up to $900--now, 3 weeks later, I'm down below $600. I don't know. It seems like it's constantly "reward the retard" day at Stars. I'd be down worse if it weren't for my "never lose more than one buy-in" philosophy.

I had a guy in a $10 SnG last night (big stack) call my 10 BB LP raise with the Hilton Sisters (QQ) from UTG with (and I swear on the Bible here)--42s. Of course, he flops A-3-5 and IGHN.

I won't even get into the limit beats I've taken.

Take a few days off--refocus. Read a book or two, but don't play at all. Take your week or so off, and clear your head. Then sit back down, with all the beats out of your mind and get back to kicking ass. Hope it works out for you!

I plan on taking some time off. I don't even want to play limit but clearing the stars bonus any other way is SOOOO slow. The problem is I'm also down playing PLO and NLHE in the past 2 weeks too. If it wasn't for the $320 in bonus I earned, I would be down much more money for the month.

It s been like that or worse fror me in limit. It started great and all of the sudden I simply couldnt win a hand. The 1/2 games at party are suposed to be goldmines with so much calling stations, but they havent been so to me. I think I am playing very well, but sometimes I just get so desperate and frustrated that I just throw away a few BB.

People wont fold their crap and that is suposed to be great, but instead they hit and kick my balls!

I cant handle that. In NL when I feel like that I can become the bully and push in for a few consecutive hands and hopefully dont get called. In limit, there is nothing i CAN DO...

My experience is...limit sucks!

Sorry to see you on such a bad run but look back over some of those hands and I think you will be able to see where you could have saved quite a few bets. That is the key when you are in a down swing, or for that matter running well, is to not give away more than you have to with bad calls, etc. As you know the line between winning and losing at limit is a very thin one and one of the big factors deciding which side you come up on lies in being able to consistantly save bets when you know you are beat.

Also 18 ho's or perhaps just one with some good oral skills is not such a bad idea either

Thanks for the support guys and I do see odogg's point that this could have been worse if I was playing NL than limit so who knows what would have happened then. This was just a glimpse of what happened so I think I could also have made more money on my hands that did hold and maybe protected some of my hands that got outdrawn. Its been a tough month as I am down money for the month but bonuses are making it not terrible. If I didn't take a hit in AC too, I would be positive after all this crap.

18 ho's sound good right about now. And sushi.
