Did I play this right?

Postby Rhound50 » Wed Dec 22, 2004 4:05 pm

I am playing 2/3 NL at a B&M card room with this hand. I am sitting with about $600 my opponant and ABC player has about $400 and just sucked me out of a hand with KQ vs my AK, with a boat on the river. I am in the BB with 67s, villian makes it $15, 3 other players call in front so I call also. Flop is 743 2 diamonds. I check villian makes it $25 it folds back to me, I am pretty sure he has big cards, so I make it $60 thinking I can take it right there, he calls. Now I'm not sure what to think, if he had AA or KK he reraises so I'm thinking flush draw with AK? The turn is the 6 of diamonds and I would have bet but as the card falls his eyes go to his chips than to mine, and I'm pretty sure he hit the flush. I check, thinking if he bets big I have to fold. He checks behind me. Th river is another 7 giving me the nuts. I check thinking he has almost $300 beind him and I can take it all from him if i get him to bite??? Correct play or should I have bet into him???

Oof. Not that I play these kinds of blinds myself but I would've made a weakie bet at him of about 1/2 to 2/3 the pot hoping for a storming raise.

Otherwise he might think he'll have difficulty getting you to pay him off on the flush, and bet quite small. When you come back over the top of him he might start thinking 'hang on a minute, I may be beat here...' and not commit the rest of it.

But like I say, I'm a $50 NLHE dude, so I'm out of my depth.

I had a long response typed in but didnt like it. It was too confusing. Short answer. I would bet the river.

I would have bet 100 on the river. He might call for a 3rd of his stake or think your bet is a show of weakness and push all in. If he folds he is going to check check anyway. I bet he had a big pair but not AA and with the straight and the flush on the board he is not putting anymore money in the pot. He would have called a small 1/2 pot bet on the turn because he probibly had a big diamond. The odds of him having two diamonds are very slim and you had the straight already. I think I would have bet the turn for at least half the pot also.

This answer is for the stakes and the game you are playing. It wouldn't be the correct answer for a 1/2 NLHE online game. Because then you would more then likely be up against any 2 diamonds. Checking the turn and the river is the correct play in a 1/2 NLHE game online.

I usually don't like to look for a check raise on the river. Since it was checked on the turn too, it would look like a steal if you bet out on the river so I think that sets up for him to bluff at it better than checking to him.

Iceman, I would really like to hear what you had to say conufusing or not.

The results of this hand were good, the guy to my pleasure pushed all in and I beat him in the pot, but another player who I know and respect thought I misplayed it and should have bet on the river.

My thought at the time was that he had made the flush on the turn and if I made a small bet he was going to just call, at least if I check raised him I could make it a good value amount something he had to call and make more money off it. I didnt expect him to go all in, thought that was quite a pleasant surprise.

I think this is the perfect situation to make a weak lead. No way he's putting you on a boat (most likely) and you are likely to get raised by a big flush, the other alternative being he has a high pair and either calls you down or tries to push you off the hand with a bluff. I think checking the river could be horrible if he flips up QQ, KK etc as he's sure to call down a bet of 80 or so with these sort of hands, thinking you're taking a pop at the pot. And if your read is correct (and he really did have the flush) surely he'll raise your bet anyway, unless he's very cautious. If you held a set on the flop, you played it very curiously, so he surely can't put you on a boat with that 7 on the river.

By my calculations the pot is about $200 at the river and he has another $300.
Here are your options:

1) Check..
He might check behind you even with a flush..bad for you
He might bet around $75 but fold to your all in...bad for you

2) You bet $75
He might raise you with a flush ( to around $150) because you made a weak bet..now he cant fold to your all in
He might call you with a flush...better than check/check..you get an extra $75
He might fold, but if he does you come out the same as if you checked , but its still better. Anytime the result is the same but he didnt see your cards you get the advantage. He doesnt know how you play or if his fold was good or not.

3) You bet pot $200
He might fold a flush...really bad for you
He might fold when he wouldve called $75..bad for you.

This response is a little better than what I had written the first time. Weak lead is the way to go here.
