NL$25 to NL$400 in a year @ 1k hands/day

Postby DoctorHandles » Tue Dec 18, 2007 3:16 am

I am starting over my poker career as of today. I am going to start playing NL$25 and build my way up to NL$1000 by the end of 2008 playing 2,000 hands a day.

My current bankroll is approx. $3K (vast majority has been withdrawn), so I am massively over rolled for the stakes I am going to start at. I also am the economics tutor for the UCLA athletics department and make $17/hr there, so I will have something good to put on my job application if this does not work out and I have a source of income outside of poker. I feel both of these facts will play a crucial roll in minimizing the stress for the endeavor I am about to attempt.

I am a very happy person. I tend to get good results at most things I do without too much work, then stop at good results with being lazy rather than pushing myself and getting awesome results. But no more. I want to go into screenwriting (currently taking classes for it at UCLA), and I wouldn't mind having poker supplement my income on the side.

This 2000 hands/day thing is going down. I only need 9 more classes to graduate with my degree from UCLA and have 5 quarters to do it in. My 3 classes for next quarter are History of the Romantic Comedy, Macroeconomic Thoery, and an independent study screenwriting class. Though there are some days I won't be home (going to be gone for 4 day for Christmas for example), this 2000k hands/day thing is going to be the norm rather than the exception.

Anyone who wants to read my journal and give advice on the hands I post is most welcome to and should know it's greatly appreciated. Gogogogogoogo me.

Results for the first 2000 hands: -$5.6 (all of my post are not going to include rakeback). Ran quite horribly, my +EV thing expired and is not available for download right now, but I'm fairly confident I ran absolutely horrible all in luck wise. A few hands I was confused on.

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (6 handed) Converter Tool from (Format: Bet The Pot)

saw flop|saw showdown

SB ($56.25)
Hero ($25.55)
UTG ($25)
MP ($28.60)
CO ($6.45)
Button ($25.45)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [Qd], [Qh].
MP calls $0.25, 3 folds, Hero raises to $1.5, MP calls $1.

Flop: ($2.85) [5c], [6s], [8c] (3 players)
Hero bets $2, MP calls $2.

Turn: ($6.85) [2s] (3 players)
Hero checks, MP checks.

River: ($6.85) [Ah] (3 players)
Hero checks, MP checks.

Final Pot: $6.85

I was going for a turn check-raise here. If I bet, I assume I am calling a shove, yes? If I bet and get called about half the river cards in this deck suck, hence the attempted CRAI.

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (5 handed) Converter Tool from (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

Hero ($53.75)
MP ($44.05)
Button ($24.65)
SB ($24.40)
BB ($79.20)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with 9Image, JImage.
Hero raises to $0.85, 3 folds, BB calls $0.60.

Flop: ($1.80) JImage, 3Image, 7Image (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $1.5, BB calls $1.50.

Turn: ($4.80) JImage (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks.

River: ($4.80) 5Image (2 players)
BB bets $6, Hero calls $6.

Final Pot: $16.80

Is a turn check good here (note stacks)? I thought getting CRed would suck horribly here, and figure most villains are stabbing the river after it goes c/c on the turn.

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (6 handed) Converter Tool from (Format: Bet The Pot)

Hero ($51.85)
BB ($23.15)
UTG ($55.25)
MP ($24.65)
CO ($76.85)
Button ($29.15)

Preflop: Hero is SB with [8h], [7h].
UTG calls $0.25, 3 folds, Hero completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($0.75) [6d], [4d], [5d] (3 players)
Hero bets $0.75, BB raises to $2, UTG calls $2, Hero calls $1.25.

This is standard yes? We should not be going ape on the flop should we?

I ran good in music though, don't usually listen to music while I hustle but I was feelin' it. Got the Grammy 2006 Nominees CD from my sister and tons of songs on it are awesome. "When soul meets body" might be my favorite song of all time.

Gogogogogo you indeed.

I hope you get there dood, I really do, but 60k hands a month on top of a job would be enough to send me stark raving mad. Then again I'm an old cunt and am probably more than 1/2 way there anyway.

So good luck, and post lots of dubious hands.

Hand 1. wet board, I would pound turn, Check call river probably. He might bluff with busted draws. Dont get fancy with check raises on boards this draw heavy IMO.

Hand2. Ok I guess, I would probably bet turn though.

Hand3. Interesting, probably a good idea to slow down and reevaluate turn, back in my days at 25 NL I would probably have gone ape on the flop though.

Did another 2K today and won $83. I'm still running quite badly all in equity wise, and have had more than my fair share of coolers. Luckily I had several stackes donated my way today (twice I think I got it all in against overcards). I really want that equity program so I can start whining w/graphs, the cornerstone of any good journal.

I am not check/calling the turn enough.

LOL @ sick reeeeeeedz at NL$25.

Flop: ($3.60) [Qc], [Kd], [7d] (2 players)

Only got 850 hands in today. Won $110 though.

I went over my friends poker tracker stuff and TheGoldenOne went over mine, so I did a good amount of non-playing poker stuff today. Guess I'll have to try to make up the hands tommorrow :(

Wasn't sure what to do on these two.

I'm guessing my old poker life was around 100,000-150,000 hands total.

I don't have a big enough sample size to make poker EV very useful but from what I've seen the green is above the red and as I play more and more it's getting closer and closer together.

I'm a huge fan of position I just have 0 respect for limpers.

Anyhow, play 1500 hands today and lost $40 running the worst I can remember running in a while. Flopping top set in a blind war vs a flopped straight, losing AA vs KK, getting overpairs all in vs a couple flush draws with their draws hitting, etc. Buying my new computer tomorrow which should make hustling more fun and easier.

1200 hands for +$75, I ran horribly again today both equity wise and getting coolered left and right. I played probably the best I've ever played today though. I'm usually pretty good at being solid/aggressive but I made a few really good bluffs to make it a pretty successful sessoin.

Still not happy I didn't hit 2K though, but wasn't planning on playing at all today though so whatever.
