nice hands. I probably would have capped the flop in hand 1. If not and a good card came on the turn, a check raise may be best unless you think everyone will check to get the flush card.

Another short session today. Got pocket aces twice in 50 hands and won them both, but that was about it. Even folded AKo on the turn when it became clear nothing was going to come of it and someone else really liked what they had, as he was leading out after each street. If you saw my Yikes! post yesterday, you'll understand why I mention that fold.

I've wrapped up my first weekend on the Party Beginner tables, and I'm still in the black overall, but just barely. it felt like it was just a handful of hands, that had they gone the other way, that would have made a big difference in the other direction. As can be seen from some of the hands I've posted in the Limit thread, I still need to work on recognizing when to get out of a hand before major damage is done to my stack.

Overall totals for the Party Beginner tables:

Hands: 983
VP$P: 17.40
BB/100: 1.11
Starting Balance: $75.00 (includes $25 first-time deposit bonus)
Ending Balance: $77.31 (was as high as $92.71 Saturday morning)
Won/Lost: $2.31

I think I missed a session in PT somewhere, because it shows me as having won $3.28 overall at the $.15/$.30 level, so the BB/100 numbers probably don't match the won/lost total.

It's been a week since the last update, so it's about time for some news...

So far, the assault on the Party Beginner tables has been going pretty well. The wife was gone all day Saturday, so of course I had nothing better to do than to play poker all day long. :) Unlike the previous weekend where I lost ground, I actually cleared just under 100BB on Saturday alone! At this level, where 20-30BB pots are not too uncommon, it doesn't take too many hands to reach those numbers.

I played a quick session this morning before catching the train, and that was just enough to push me over 200BB total since I began. Here's the hand that pushed me over the top:

Party Poker 0.15/0.30 Hold'em (7 handed)

Preflop: Hero is CO with [Tc], [Ts].
UTG calls, 2 folds, Hero raises, 1 fold, SB calls, 1 fold, UTG calls.

The beauty of position - you can raise and everyone who has already called will almost automatically call the raise.

Flop: (7 SB) [Kc], [Kh], [2h] (3 players)
SB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, SB folds, UTG calls.

Most of the time at these levels, if someone were to have a King here, they'd bet - once in a while they'll C/R, but they pretty much never check/call when flopping the set here. So, the odds are pretty good he doesn't have a King.

Turn: (4.50 BB) [6d] (2 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets, UTG calls.

Doesn't look like it helped him, so get another BB from UTG.

River: (6.50 BB) [2d] (2 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets, UTG calls.

Just keep calling... Just keep calling...

Final Pot: 8.50 BB

Results in white below:
UTG has 4h 4s (two pair, kings and fours).
Hero has Tc Ts (two pair, kings and tens).
Outcome: Hero wins 8.50 BB.

Between Party and Firepay, I've got about $190 in my bankroll right now (plus another $30 that I'm keeping at Pacific for days when I feel like putting up with their software and slow games). I'm just waiting for a reload bonus from Party before depositing the $60. But, I think I'm still on track to hit $250 in the next couple of weeks, which is 500BB for the $.25/$.50 tables. Since I'm still pretty new to this game, I'm sticking to more conservative bankrolls for now.

Totals since the assault began:

Date Started: 10/12/2005
Site: Party Poker
Level: $.15/$.30
Hands: 3256
VP$P: 17.38%
BB/100: 6.18
Starting Balance: $50
Ending Balance: $135.13
Won/Lost: $60.13 (doesn't include $25 deposit bonus)

EDIT: didn't realize I had a date filter set in PT, so some of the numbers changed.

I hereby declare an end to my Newbieness as of 12/31/2005. :)

The good news - Since I discovered poker in mid-October, I have logged close to 50K hands of Hold-em and Omaha, and built my bankroll up to just over $1000. I don't think I can really call myself a newbie any more.

The bad news - our washer and dryer have gone kaput, and the only money we have to replace them with (short of putting them on a credit card) is the $1000 I've won playing poker. So, since the start of the new year seems like a good time for starting anew, I've decided to take out enough to pay for the new washer/dryer (which should give my wife a new appreciation for my "hobby") and start my poker playing from the beginning - with $150. Up to this point has been my "training wheels" time, now it's time to take the training wheels off and take this poker thing seriously. The money I'm taking out more than covers everything I've spent on books/software/starting bankroll, so from this point forward I'm truly playing with other people's money.

So, to that end, here are my goals for 2006:

* Track every session carefully - I've signed up at pokercharts.com, and I will record every session there.

* Bonus whore with the best of them. A good portion of the $1000 I built up came from bonuses, and I see no reason to change that now.

* Become a solid 7-card stud player in addition to Omaha and Hold-em. I've never played 7-card stud before, but I think that each new game you can add makes you a better overall player. As an example - the short time I've spent playing Omaha has made me much more cognizant of the absolute nuts on the board (and whether or not I have them) than I was before.

* Be a winning player at the following levels:

$200 NLHE
$5/$10 LHE
$200 PLO8 - there simply isn't much out there for limit Omaha, so PLO8 looks like the way to go
???? 7-card stud

* Build my bankroll up to $5000, which is comfortably above the suggested bankroll for each of the levels listed above. Once I reach that level, at the end of each month, I will look at how much above $5K I'm at (assuming, of course, that I am above $5K at the end of the month. :)) Of the extra, 25% will stay put to build the bankroll, 25% will be set aside for taxes, and 50% will be spent on whatever we want.

* By the end of the year, clear $1000/month from playing poker. That was my original goal when I started playing, and I think it's within reach by the end of the year.

* Post in this journal much more regularly. Time spent posting is time spent not playing, which is why I haven't been posting at all lately. It's importatant to reflect after each session - look at what went right and what went wrong, and the journal is a great place for that.

Well, the new year got off to a rather lackluster start. Played on a couple of tables of $.25/$.50 Omaha Hi at Check-N-Raise - 97 hands in all. I should have realized it was going to be one of those nights when the board paired on 9 out of the first 10 hands (and if you play Omaha, you know that a paired board equals a full house more often than not).

Out of the 97 hands I played, I won a grand total of 4. One of those, I caught a set of Queens on the river in a checked-around (meaning, small) pot. Another was a runner-runner nut flush. The third was a pair of kings that won unimproved - again the pot was small. And the last one I flopped the nut straight - 9TQJ in my hand on a 789 flop (with 2 clubs - I have no clubs). I bet, one call, and the next guy raises. From past negative experiences with flopping nut straights, i figured that he might also have TJ but with a flush draw, so I don't 3-bet. Turn is another club, so I just call down from there - I decided that he would have to show me the flush, but he showed 56xx for the bottom end of the straight.

So, all in all, I solidly connected with exactly 1 flop in the 97 hands. Considering that, the fact that I finished the night down $3.10 isn't bad at all. With Omaha, if you don't connect with the flop and have either a made hand or strong nut draws (or better yet, both), there's not much point in continuing.

Totals to date:

$.25/$.50 Omaha Hi - 97 hands - -6.39 BB/100

Bankroll: $148.96 - down $3.10 from start. :(

Whew... what a day. For most of the day, it was win some money playing hold-em and turn around a lose it playing Omaha. Then, tonight I got on a couple of live Omaha tables with some maniacs (think 6 and 7 way capped pre-flop pots), caught some good hands that held up, and finished up the day in the black.

1/3/2006 stats:
$.25/$.50 Omaha Hi - 203 hands - 4.48 BB/100 (actual BB/100 is higher, as some of my winning hands at the end were not imported)
$.15/$.30 LHE - 257 hands - 18.03 BB/100

Total stats:
$.25/$.50 Omaha Hi - 300 hands - 0.97 BB/100
$.15/$.30 LHE - 257 hands - 18.03 BB/100

Starting BR: $152.06
Current BR: $176.86
Won so far: $24.80 :)

Hey, it's a start. It's really strange playing $.15/$.30 again after dipping my toes in the $1/$2 games before starting over. I want to get the bankroll up to $200 before moving up to the $.25/$.50 level, as that will give me 400 BB. Having suffered through a couple of 150BB+ downswings, I want to be sure I have a nice cushion.

I just love low limit Omaha!! :D

I mean, where else can you hit a nut straight on the turn, get lots of action from second-best (or worse) hands, then hit the nut flush on the river only to get more action. Just one or two big hands like this are all that's needed to turn a mediocre session into a nice winning one.

Omaha Hi $0.25-$0.50 (real money), hand #1,672,587,388
Table Quito, 5 Jan 2006 12:05 AM ET

Seat 1: pokerherkel
Seat 2: enzo1960

Seat 4: Brokeman70
Seat 5: BoogieMd
Seat 6: stickdude [ [Ah],[Kd],[Ac],[Tc] ]
Seat 7: alafunky
Seat 8: Montana408
Seat 9: nomarbles12
Seat 10: Hole Shot
ANTES/BLINDS
Pec343 posts blind ($0.15), Brokeman70 posts blind ($0.25).

PRE-FLOP
BoogieMd calls $0.25, stickdude calls $0.25, alafunky folds, Montana408 calls $0.25, nomarbles12 calls $0.25, Hole Shot calls $0.25, pokerherkel calls $0.25, enzo1960 calls $0.25, Pec343 calls $0.10, Brokeman70 checks.

Another reason to love Omaha - lots and lots of pre-flop limpers...

FLOP [board cards [Qc],[Ks],[2s] ]
Pec343 checks, Brokeman70 checks, BoogieMd checks, stickdude checks, Montana408 checks, nomarbles12 checks, Hole Shot checks, pokerherkel bets $0.25, enzo1960 bets $0.50, Pec343 folds, Brokeman70 calls $0.50, BoogieMd folds, stickdude calls $0.50, Montana408 folds, nomarbles12 folds, Hole Shot folds, pokerherkel bets $0.50, enzo1960 bets $0.50, Brokeman70 folds, stickdude calls $0.50, pokerherkel calls $0.25.

Not a bad flop for me, but not a great one, either. It might have been a mistake to call that many bets, but with that many pre-flop limpers, the pot is already quite big. I need to see a Jack or a club on the turn or I'm outta there.

TURN [board cards [Qc],[Ks],[2s],[Jc] ]
stickdude checks, pokerherkel bets $0.50, enzo1960 bets $1, stickdude bets $1.50, pokerherkel bets $1.50, enzo1960 calls $1, stickdude calls $0.50.

Well, well, well... Forget this "Jack or a club" stuff, I'll take both! :D It's not often that you get to check/3-bet, but with a nut straight and a redraw to the nut flush, let's go! My feeling while the betting was going on was that I might be splitting the pot, so I obviously want another club to hit.

RIVER [board cards [Qc],[Ks],[2s],[Jc],[8c] ]
stickdude bets $0.50, pokerherkel bets $1, enzo1960 calls $1, stickdude bets $1, pokerherkel bets $1, enzo1960 calls $1, stickdude calls $0.50.

And Bingo! Even with the flush on the board, they still keep raising me. Please, keep giving me your money, guys!

SHOWDOWN
pokerherkel shows [ 4C,AS,KC,9D ]
enzo1960 mucks cards
stickdude shows [ AH,KD,AC,10C ]
stickdude wins $17.50.

SUMMARY
Dealer: enzo1960
Pot: $17.75 | Rake: $0.25
pokerherkel loses $5.25
enzo1960 loses $5.25
Pec343 loses $0.25
Brokeman70 loses $0.75
BoogieMd loses $0.25
stickdude bets $5.25, collects $17.50, net $12.25 <-- that's a 24BB NET from one hand.
alafunky loses $0
Montana408 loses $0.25
nomarbles12 loses $0.25
Hole Shot loses $0.25

So, with that hand, and a few other big hands, I finished up for the night, and with clearing another $10 of the Check-N-Raise bonus, my bankroll is already over $200. Not too bad for 3 days effort.

1/4/2006 stats:

Ever have one of those nights where you're down a lot in a session, but you're determined to at least get back to even, no matter how long it takes? I had one of those sessions, and it took 4 hours, but I got back to even - in fact, I finished with a $.05 profit. :) That works about to a penny an hour, but considering that I was down 30BB at one point in the session, I'll take it!

The reason it was so important to finish this session in the black? Because I had my first losing day of the year yesterday (hey, we can't all be Piers with his 1000 day winning streak, or whatever it is), and I didn't want to have two losing days in a row - for such things tend to turn into the 100BB downswings that I seem to have from time to time. I had actually been up for most of the day, until I hit a couple of nasty Omaha sessions this evening - I think between the two tables I was down almost 50BB once.

Anyway, I did finish the day in positive territory, and with the help of another $10 of bonus that I cleared tonight, I'm within a few bucks of my high bankroll for the year.

1/5/2006 stats:
$.25/$.50 Omaha Hi - 146 hands - -20.00 BB/100
$.15/$.30 LHE - 327 hands - -3.52 BB/100

1/6/2006 stats:
$.25/$.50 Omaha Hi - 465 hands - 2.69 BB/100
$.15/$.30 LHE - 145 hands - -5.63 BB/100
$.25/$.50 LHE - 32 hands - 14.06 BB/100 <-- actually hopped on this table by mistake. I want the BR to be a little bit higher before moving up.

Total stats:
$.25/$.50 Omaha Hi - 1,074 hands - 0.95 BB/100
$.15/$.30 LHE - 785 hands - 6.01 BB/100
$.25/$.50 LHE - 32 hands - 14.06 BB/100

Starting BR: $152.06
Current BR: $201.06
Won so far: $29.00 :)
Bonus earned so far: $20.00

I think what I'll start doing is posting a graph of my progress every Friday night - give people a different view of how I'm doing... Here's the first one of the year.

Patience, patience, patience...

After a nice morning run at the limit hold-em tables which put me cleanly above the 20 buy-ins I want to have for NL, I hopped on a $10 NL table. Most of the session was pretty routine - win a few small pots, lose a few, nothing spectacular - just pretty much stayed between $8 and $12.

Now, the only way I can describe the way the villian in this hand had been playing is that he watched too much poker on TV. Lots of big bluffs, pushing people off hands and then showing his junk - that kind of stuff. He even pushed me off a pair of Jacks once on an A-high flop and then showed 24o. At one point he was up to $30 by getting lucky, but then pretty quickly dropped back down to around $10 when a couple of other players doubled through him. i knew it was just a matter of time before I'd have a good hand to go against him with - I was simply hoping he wouldn't bust out first.

And then I got the hand I'd been waiting for -

stickdude checks, jetski1978 checks, P0T bets $0.10, xyx folds, stickdude bets $0.20, jetski1978 folds, P0T calls $0.10.

And there's our set. I threw the min-raise out there to try to get it heads-up with villian, which worked.

TURN [board cards [5s],[3d],[7d],[4c] ]
stickdude checks, P0T bets $0.50, stickdude calls $0.50.

Here, I knew he had the straight. I'd been paying attention to his betting patterns, and this bet was larger than his "throw something out there and hope everyone folds" and smaller than his bluff bets. Of course I call, as I've got outs to fill up - the implied odds if I do fill up are pretty good (like, say, his whole stack) if I'm right about him having a straight.

RIVER [board cards [5s],[3d],[7d],[4c],[3h] ]
stickdude checks, P0T bets $1, stickdude bets $5, P0T bets $8.50 and is all-in, stickdude calls $4.50.

Just the card I wanted to see. :) Because I was pretty certain he had the straight, and that he wouldn't be able to get away from it if he did, I threw out a bigger bet than I might otherwise. Of course, it worked.

SHOWDOWN
P0T shows [ [Qs],[6h] ]
stickdude shows [ [5h],[5c] ]
stickdude wins $20.60.

The bankroll is higher at the end of the day than at the start, so you could call it a good day. It would have been a great day, except for my morning hold-em session...

Let's see...

KK - A hits the flop, and of course two people have an A
AJ - have top 2 pair after the turn, lose to a 6-high straight on the river
AA - I raise from UTG, UTG+1 3-bets with KK and gets 3 cold-callers before the button caps it. One of the morons cold-called 3 bets with Q4s and gets a runner-runner flush to take down a monster pot.

Luckily, my less-than-premium hands carried the day -

99 - flops a full house - 9's full of Kings, and someone holding a king helps cap it on the turn and river
88 - gets a full house
T6s - gets a straight on the river
65o - flops trip 5's, fills up on the river

My morning 2-table session finished up 40 BB, so I can't complain too much about the bad beats..

After that, it was off to a NL table to try something different. The one memorable hand from this session was posted previously. :D

Tonight was another grind-it-out for a $0.25 profit Omaha session. After being down $6 at one point, I'll take it.

Not too much poker today - just a couple hours tonight after the kiddos went to bed.

Did OK on one table, took down a nice pot with unimproved pocket 6's because I had seen the maniac fire on every street with absolutely nothing - just called him down and he had nothing once again.

The other table was completely card dead - my VP$P was around 11%, including the SB. My VP$P from the SB has been pretty high because the small blind is 2/3 of the big blind. So, a VP$P that low is really saying something.

My highest pocket pairs were Jacks, which I got 3 times -

One, flop AQQ. :(
Two, flop AKx. :(
Three, AQ gets a runner-runner wheel straight. :(

I won a tiny bit more on the first table than I lost on the second, so basically broke even for the night...

1/8/2006 stats:

Another solid day at the tables. Nothing too spectacular, but added another $16 to the bankroll in roughly 275 hands of Omaha and LHE.

Started out the day playing Omaha, where the tables kept breaking up almost as soon as I sat down - this happened 3 times in a row - I'd sit down, win one of my first 3 or 4 hands, and before I knew it, it was down to 2 or 3 people...

First table - won $4.10, table lasted 7 hands
Second table - won $1.50, table lasted 7 hands
Third table - won $4.50, table lasted 14 hands

Then I found a table that stayed full for a while, and basically broke even...

Tonight I "moved up" to the $.25$.50 LHE tables after beating up the $.15/$.30 tables for 7+ BB/100. I was originally going to wait until I had 500 BB for that level ($250), but since I've already been through that level once before I started over, I figured that 485 BB was probably close enough. :)

1/9/2006 stats:
$.25/$.50 Omaha Hi - 148 hands - 21.22 BB/100
$.25/$.50 LHE - 120 hands - 0.92 BB/100

Total stats:
$.25/$.50 Omaha Hi - 1,368 hands - 3.08 BB/100
$.15/$.30 LHE - 1089 hands - 7.16 BB/100
$.25/$.50 LHE - 153 hands - 0.72 BB/100
$10 NLHE - 113 hands - 50.66 PTBB/100

Starting BR: $152.06
Current BR: $237.96
Won so far: $65.90 :)
Bonus earned so far: $20.00
