Not sure how the states work it ... in Canada you can invest in a retirement plan (called RRSP ... tax deferred and tax-free growth) ... one advantage being that if you are a first time homebuyer, you can borrow against that money for downpayment without penalty. There's even a way to include your house as part of your RRSP although that gets pretty complicated. For a savvy investor you can really beat the game.
I've heard Sweden's tax rate is even worse than ours.
