Big draw, big stacks

Postby Ojingo » Mon Jan 09, 2006 1:01 pm

$100 PLO on UB. I have a $200+ stack, and my opponent has close to $200. My opponent is a solid regular; we respect eachothers play and usually stay out of eachothers way.

I have [Ad][Qd][Jd][9h] in the SB. There is a minraise in MP, solid regular calls in the CO, I call, BB calls.

Flop: [8h][Td][Kd], giving me 8 diamond outs and 14 straight outs. I check, BB checks, MP bets $4, and CO raises pot. He might do this because he senses weakness (MP IS weak), as a semibluff or with a genuine hand. I decide to flat call. BB and MP fold.

Turn is a [6s]. Pot is $48. What is your play? CO has to know by now that I don't have a set, so if he has a weak 2-pair type of hand he will probably take another stab when checked to. With a set, he will most likely bet again, since the least obvious draw hit.

My decision to flat call the flop is probably debatable as well; I preferred to try and keep the others in with weaker draws, athough that didn't work. Also, I wanted to keep the pot managable in case of a bad turn card.

Ideas?

well if you know he knows you don't have a set, i would check/call the turn because leading out on a card that probably didn't help you won't do anything but make him raise bigger. It all depends on how much fold equity you think you have on the flop but I don't mind the check call on the flop either. You want to see the river as cheap as possible so check and go from there.

If you think you can represent 97, go for a check raise if you think he can lay it down. Otherwise, he might check behind you on the turn fearing the 97 and you get to see the river for free.

I have become a fan of blocking bets. Have you guys had any experience sticking half the pot out there as a blocking bet. This is of course assuming he doesn't already have the nuts.

I don't like the blocking bet here really, I think it's too likely to be sniffed out by a decent oppo and raised. I like the smooth call, you've probably got decent implied odds if the straight comes, and obviously you have pot odds quite easily with this enormous draw.

I like your flop play, too - no reason to get it all in as a near coin-flip with a set when you can let in players with small sets, lesser draws etc. to swell the pot with dead money. If it had just been bet once, I would raise, but to RE-raise will surely knock everyone else out and deny you the possibility of building a huge 4-way pot (for example) with you holding 40%-odd of the equity.
