Session notes

Ok, I'm going to attempt to answer Goop's "How do you win at PLO?" question, in installments, with some session notes. Hopefully others will do the same, as I think this differs dramatically depending on how the table is playing. I particularly hope Oj will throw in some stuff form the 6max 1/2, as the hands posted seem right on the money, and I'd be surprized if he isn't making some good progress in that one (in which case the answer to the quesiton in Goop's post is simply to keep doing whatever you're doing--if not, I'd be happy to give whatever analysis I can).

My casino 1/2/5 from tonight was actually pretty bad, but I still ended up up $20 after 6 hours of effectively no hands. I'd say tonight's answer to the question is simply folding a LOT.

Here are a few hands: I raise to $20 in LP with KKQTss and get 5 callers. Board is raggedy and absolutely horrible for my hand, which I check. Turn pairs an 8, and, as it turns out, I had folded with my raise exactly the 2 players with an 8. So, hand gets checked down, and I actually win with 2 pair kings and eights.

Then there's a LONG stretch of folds. I was just catching no real hand and remember a 1-hour stretch of playing 1 hand that didn't hit. So, I keep folding and finally bleed down below break-even.

Then I raise to $20 on 789Tss with clubs in LP with only 1 short-stacked caller. Flop is 933 with clubs, and after a check, I go ahead and fire $30 at it. Shorty lays down, saying something about my probably having AA with clubs.

A few other small winners are in there--like QQ and the board is Q33 with a bet to me, which I flat call. Turn is an A, making a flush. I bet, and he folds--making some remark to the effect that that was my first bet in the last 2 hours.

Also second nut flush short-handed picks up a little bit.

But, on the whole, I'm fairly happy with this session with almost no real hands and still slightly up. I think staying disciplined in those situations and not doing anything stupid is a HUGE source for keeping your numbers good, actually.

One regret I do have was calling with naked JJ in EP. I'm beginning to think that's a loser in this kind of game if you don't have good side cards. I may also have played a hair too tight in the short-handed phase, but I make no claims to being a good short-handed player anyway (Short-handed, I feel like I can probably come close to holding my own, but I'm really just waiting for FR and trying to keep the game going). So, when it became clear that the game wasn't going to fill up again, I just left.
