An important point. But, one that needs the CORRECT ATE info.
This is one of the silliest mistakes people can make, trying to "save" a bet.
If you want to save bets, start with the flop. When it's only one more bet to you, AND you are last, there is almost no such thing as laying down a hand.
Yeah, you can do it, but ONLY against people with whom you've had EXTENSIVE experience, and KNOW that they
(1) Know what they're doing
(2) Don't bluff
Sometimes, the person has the appearance of someone who never bluffs, but yet is a HOPELESS GOOBER, and now they think that because no one bet, suddenly their pair of nines, is good.
Usually, when you get to see someone, you can see the HOPELESS GOOBER look in their eyes.
But, without SPECIFIC knowledge of how someone plays, you just CANNOT and SHOULD not, throw hands away, with pot odds of say 8-10 or more
there is so much BULLSHIFT in the world of poker today, that when it's one more bet to you, you just call and hope for the best, barring specific information about the player.
Sometimes, it seems as though they just HAVE to have it . . . . . . . BUT THEY DON"T
In today's world, with many people trying to shoot their way out
Checking the river, is usually the best play, with a hand that's not super strong.
Let 'em try to shoot their way out, then call.
This way, you do not subject yourself to a raise, and get extra money from a bluffer who would not have called had you bet, but may very well try to "shoot it out"
