Well, there is a difference between having a backer, and having someone stake you in.
Having a backer, is a long term event, and being staked in, is usually a one-time thing.
For having a backer, there is only one fair way to go. The wins are split 50-50, and the losses much be made up, before the player can make any more money. I usually play when I want to, but sometimes a request is made for me to play a certain game. Sometimes, he likes company when HE plays, and asks me to join him in a particular game. It's a very positive thing for me, to play at the same table. I don't get bored, and am able to play much better.
Now, we have been friends for 10 years, so this is more of a friendship thing, than a pure business relationship. The other day, we drove to Wisconsin to play no limit. I didn't want to go, but went because I know he doesn't like to drive by himself.
I do not put up any money, but still collect my half AS LONG AS I'M IN THE BLACK.
losses are recorded, and are made up before collecting any more money.
If I'm broke, and have nothing to eat, I can still get an advance, but this too must be made up.
In order for any backer/player relationship to work:
The backer must know that the player will not just take off, if he gets way behind.
the player must know that the backer has the money, to withstand a losing streak, and that he has confidence in the player, that's he'll be able to make up the loss.
My rich friend in Vegas, now plays for a backer. He's playing some huge game, that's too big even for him.
Playing for a backer, can work out, and many players play better, when ther'ye working for someone.
Oh yeah, another thing: The player must be reasonable, and agree to play for the backer, for a certain period, before "going solo"
It's totally wrong, for the player to win, say 4000, then take his 2000 and go off on his own.
For providing the chance, the player should play for the backer, long enough for him to make a decent amount of money.
