Value of hands changing with many limpers

Postby flintsword » Sun Nov 28, 2004 10:56 am

Hi Adam,
Just getting used to this site. I have a very specific question for an Omaha Hi player in LP.

"Does the value of a gapped wrap-type hand increase or decrease with more limpers in EP and MP?"

"With many limpers in Omaha Hi, are smaller wrap-type hands favoured in LP?"

Ok, I know that many limpers, the odds are more favourable, but I am thinking about hands like Ad Kd Jh Th or Kd Qd Ts 9s all the way down to Ts 9s 7d 6d. I was thinking that with many limpers, the remaining deck may be richer with smaller cards (T to 2), which means smaller wraps start looking more likely to fill up.

It is a vague idea that has been occuring to me in my Omaha Hi games. It may not have any merit, so I decided to float it here. What do you think?

Dear Felonius_Monk,

Thank you for the interim answer. I am looking forward to Adam contributing and I have a stack of questions to keep the forum lively.

Please note that although I have done a fair bit of playing and studying, I have no illusions about how weak I am at this game and probably play too conservatively for now, so the questions as they come will be, ... well, ... a little naive and very tightly focussed, as I try to answer specific questions.

So the general threshold for a J high str8 looks to be three people to be considered and the higher gapped wraps AKJTds and KQT9ds are LP raising candidates. Thank you, good to know.

Any double-suited one gap wrap hand is playable (though 2356 etc is a bit weak), the higher ones (J high and above) definitely raisable. You wont lose much by raising lower holdings either, but as you rightly said as a tight player you probably shouldn't (especially online where the buyins are so shallow and raising the pot on marginal holdings is not a favourable move). KQT9ds is a monster hand and should definitely be raised, same with the A-high variant. JT98ds is the best drawing hand in omaha high, and anything that is "similar" to this hand is raisable. With only single suited or no-suited big wrap hands, there is less incentive to raise as you need to hit a very specific flop and there's no minor flush feature to "promote" by removing suited Qs and Ks in other players' hands.
