as many of you may know, Stars has an easy option to buy-in to most tables for 40bbs. for example, you get an option (default iirc) to buy-in for $40 at a $100max $0.50/$1 table. i find that some players at the cryptos also often buy-in short.

what are the theoretical issues involved in playing against one or more short stacks?

some of my (obvious) thoughts:

- don't be afraid of getting it all-in with some of these folks, as they will push on the flop with a draw (and sometimes not be terribly wrong to do so).

- related to the above, try to have a hand with showdown value if you intend to get aggressive with one of these players on the flop.

- raising good two-way hands (e.g., A3QQ) pf is a plus if you can get one or more of these guys in the hand. they will usually play one-way hands, so you can get aggressive on the flop. you have fold equity AND a chance to scoop (e.g., low draws that miss). sometimes you get unlucky and run into AAxx, but this is rare (and you can still suck out).

- don't take the regular line of jamming with mediocre drawing hands, as they may put you in, and you have no implied odds and no fold equity on later streets. big draws are ok (e.g., low and flush), but most bare str8s are suspect. no reason to risk your stack when they will likely pay you off when you hit anyway. you can save money if you whiff.


that's all i can think of at the moment. any other ideas?
