Is this a typical situation where you take the free card on the turn to fill up and pretty much just give up on the hand to any big bet on the river?

I really wanted to call him on the river as I was unsure if he was bluffing but I thought that if he does do that often, especially with a big stack, i'll find a better opportunity to take him down.
