What I meant was, it's possible to make a hyperlink say something yet have it point your browser somewhere else (it's simple HTML isnt it?). So they could make an apparently innocent link saying www.livepokerforum.com and it really takes you to www.screw-up-my-computer-shag-my-wife-a ... heaven.com. Or is that wrong ? I am but a simple geneticist and I don't understand these things....

Yes, in normal HTML you can ask the browser to show a fake URL in the status bar when you hover over it, so it will look legit (unlike the link above).

I say 'ask the browser', not 'tell the browser', because browsers like Firefox have the permissions for pages to alter its status bar text turned off by default (another reason to use FF!). That makes it very easy to spot a simple phishing link.
