Larry the ROCK: profile of a WINNER

Postby AdamtheExpert » Sun Nov 21, 2004 11:33 am

OK BTPers, I know many of you are dreaming of making a living in poker. As part of my continuing series, I offer you a profile of another long term winner, that does it a different way, than other's I've mentioned.

Larry the rock makes his living playing 4-8 hold em. Don't think yo ucan make that much, well . . . . . .You can't, Unless your a . . . .. . PROP!!

yes, Larry the Rock is a proposition player, at a Sacramento area Cardroom. For those of you new people, a proposition player is someone hired by the house, to help start and fill up games, when there aren't enough customers to do so.

Most the the people ATE knows, who actually make a living in poker (well, prior to Internet poker) are PROP players. It's just such a major HELP, knowing the that check is waiting for you, when times are bad.

Larry is the tightest player, I've ever seen. His style is totally predictable. He does not get out of lline, go on tilt or ever play recklessly. He plays hands that are appropriate, to position, and behaves like a SOUTHERN Gentlemen.

Now, Larry the Rock does not make the big money normally associated with a professional player. But, he does make a living, and has done so for a long time.

Year after year, he make a living playing poker.

FOr those considering this: here's how it works in most places. Larry gets 17 bucks a hour, and only has to play 3-6 omaha and 4-8 hold em.

He gets two checks: One for minimum wage (7.25 an hour, in California) WITH deductions, and one for 9.75 a hour, WITHOUT deductions. The second check, is considered "expense reimbursemejnt" for tax purposes. Just getting most of your rake back.

Ok, so that's 680 a week. Not a whole lot . . . . . . BUT WAIT!! he beats the game, too!

When you are a prop player, you play your own money, enjoy your own wins.

but, you also are usually playing in games that are not so great, that's why they needed you to sit down, 'cause it was short.

So, you figure that he probably makes only maybe 3/4 or a big bet per hous.

So, another 250-300 a week, playing

That makes it around a grand a week, and that's not so bad.

Getting a salery, makes the occupation more legit, and MUCH more SECURE.

If you had the worst day of your life, the check still keeps on a rollin'

If you break even, now you win.

If you lost a 130 or less, now you Break even

and of course, If you win, now you "won" that much more.

Oh, by the way, YES you do have a chance at the bad beat jackpot, just like any other player.

Larry the Rock, is the Classic example of what brings home the money:

CONSISTENTCY!!

This is the key, my friends.

You don't need to be GREAT, you just need to be CONSISTENT

If your out there Larry, Hello

I know I'm pulling an old post to the top but I just got around to it.

How do you get to becoming a prop player at a casino or online?

I dont know about B&M, but you can do a search for "prop" and "poker" online and get mulitple places that can hook you up. I just looked into it last week and decided not to do it. Im going to try a few other "prop" borkers, but I didnt like the rules layed out to me by the 1st one I tried.

You will have to play alot of shorthanded games. The people I was talking to had rules that said you had to move every time a table became full. I think other places will allow you to play a full table as long as you are also playing a short table. Playing 4 handed all the time is not for me.

If u can learn to play short-handed it is well worth it.
(I play limit only, so maybe thats easier short than NL?)
If u can play well enough to break even, then the rake rebate is nothing to sneeze at.
Warning though, playing short aint easy, still not comfortable but doing ok.
Also, you wont get your pick of the juiciest tables, theres usually only a couple to pick from (at least in limit).
But despite all that I highly recommend it.
BUT playing short aint easy.
OH, and did I mention that playing short handed isnt easy?

I appreciate the replies. I'm working part time now in between "real" jobs and just exploring options.
