Anyone play Stud online?

Postby Mad Genius » Tue Nov 09, 2004 9:31 pm

I am primarily a NLHE player and have also played an extensive amount of Omaha and Omaha Split in the past. However, I have never really played Stud before and as part of my goal to become a well rounded poker player, I would like to try my hand at Stud. I play in some home games that play dealer's choice, but I generally sit out the Stud rounds as I don't feel comfortable playing a game that I barely know how to play at the stakes that we play our games. Does anyone have experience playing Stud online, and if so, how stiff is the competition? I plan on trying out the .25/.5 Stud tables on Stars and would like any advice before I get started.

Ive played some Stud online. Im no stud expert, but all as long as you only play good starting hands, you can beat the low limts easily as you fine tune your game before moving up. The main reason I dont play it anymore is that I can only play 1 table because you really need to watch the dead cards closely. After playing multiples tables of Holdem, 1 table of Stud just doesnt hold my interest.

So starting hands would be TT-AA and 3 high suited cards? Anything else I would consider playing? What about a hand like [Ac][Kc][Jd] with not a lot of paint/clubs showing otherwise?

Like I said, its been a while since I played, but here are some general guidlines:
1) High pair, especically good if the pair is higher than anyones door card
2) Any 3 suited (the higher the better)
3) Any 3 to a straight (the higher the better)
4) [Ac][Kc][Jd] is a good hand if the clubs and other paint cards are live.
5) Something like [Th][9c][9h], but get out quick if you dont improve on 4th street

Theres a good Stud section in "Super System"

Come to think of it, I did read the Stud section in Super System when I first got the book. But that was a while ago, so I guess I will be re-visiting that section. Thanks for the advice.

I started playing NL hold em about 7 months ago and have attempted to learn the game under the guidance and tutelage of Ice Man. Although I have done pretty well at NL, I began to get a little to aggressive with my play, resulting in stupid play on my part along with some pretty bad beats. I read a post on another poker forum regarding a player with a mild form of “tiltiteous” and thought that I should expand my game a little. I am a novice player, and maintain about a $200.00 BR but I thought with my recent luck with Hold em I would try to expand my game to Seven Stud. I went to PP for the .50-1.00 game and I have to say it was a nice change of pace. Its been my experience so far, that players on these tables will call with anything trying to catch a hand, thus making the average pot around $12-14 dollars on these tables. Don’t quote me on this, but I think this is a little better pot size than some of the lower limit fixed hold em tables.
I have incorporated just about the same style in my SS game as I use in Hold em, and have found it to be pretty profitable so far. Maybe there is a big difference in the games and I have been lucky. I would like your thoughts.

5 STUD PRIMA!

Postby eDgar » Wed Dec 08, 2004 7:47 pm

Built my bankroll back up completely off 5stud on Prima. It's so easy and simple. The key is knownin when your beat and letting your hand go.
I can hardly play the 7stud variant. Also, less bad beats since there are less cards.
