Ok, just because there were one or two questions that were just too involved to respond here, doesn'st mean that you should stop asking them.

I will try to answer EVERY one, as long as it doen'st take an hour to respond.

Now, if MONK answers first, I may consider that this qualifies as an official answer, and leave it at that.

He is certainly a well-qualified ATE substitute.

OK Adam, here's one...

What are the 5 biggest oft-quoted mis-conceptions or lies about poker that you can think of? There's a lot of rules and dogma that people will regurgitate without thinking about in this game, some things I guess get said so often and parrotted by others that they become gospel truths. What would you say are the biggest pieces of bull, or the biggest misconceptions held in the poker world (especially online) today?

Ok... you asked for it... you're gonna get it! :)

Can you discuss the pros and cons of limit and no-limit. Do you recommend one over the other, and if so, why? Does the personality of the player play a role in which game is better for that player?

Regarding misconceptions:

I'll be rude and interupt because this one popped into my head, it's along the lines of:

'If you lose when you flop a set and it isn't a big pot then you didn't play it right.'

I understand the point of the saying, that you play a set strong and all that, but aside from the fact that TOP set isn't always the nuts on the flop, it term is used as a blanket response to any story of a set getting beat. I think this can lead to a mentality of 'I can't possibly fold my set, ever!'

Sets are similar to KK and AA, you can't just go all in with them immediately and expect to be called by weaker hand, that of course never ever improve to beat you. You're entitled to feel you've got a strong hand but it's painful when I see people calling a bet on the river when 4 of a suit are down and showing a set.

A bet saved is equal to a bet won and all that

Uh, Monk, I can't give you an honest answer here,

Postby AdamtheExpert » Sat Dec 04, 2004 11:17 am

Ha ha, tee hee hee, why are they always asking, what cannot be?

Gee, if I answer this, there goes about half of my book!!!

You see, ATE fans, it's not really hard to learn to play winning poker. ATE has the power, to see the truth about certain critical subjects, MOST OF WHICH PEOPLE HAVE

TOTALLY, TOTALLY BASSAKWARDS!!

Now, I may have a chance at a comeback in life, get married agian and all that.

My best way to acheive this, is to go ahead with my MUCH ANTICIJPATED book.

But, mo;st of the ATE winning playing method, revolves aroulnd about 10-12 KEY points, which the rest of the world currently has WRONG.

So, I will preface my answer here, by announcing that I MUST reserve a few of these points.

So, this answer, contrary to the normal ATE policy of complets accuracy, will not be

Ok, here are the big ones (remaining after I withhold certain ones)

(1) THAT POSITION, in the vast majority of limit games, is of more than a minor inportance

(2) That tournament poker, is the most importance, test of poker skill (or for that matter
is a test of poker skill, at all

(3) That poker is one continuous game, rather than a series of individual games, and
that what happens on any given day, is unimportant

(4) That there is NO luck in poker, and that everyone has an equal share of good and
bad cards, it's what you do with it that counts

(5) HERE'S A BIG ONE: In order to successfully play a game, a bankroll of 300 big bets
is needed HA HA, TRY AT LEAST triple that amount

(6) The biggest of all: A good player, will earn one big bet per hour

WHERE IS THE BELL DID Malmuth and Sklansky get this figure!! It's been repeated and parroted so often, that most accept it as though it were the word of GOD

This fiugre, especially now in the internet age, is WAY off. Good players, are making three to five times this figure

(7) That Ace King, is Some magical, all-powerful starting hand

(8) Hi low games, are only good for the house

(9) That Moneymaker, can play

(10) OH, MY . . .Here's the GRANDADDY of all:

"We put a maximum buy in, so that some deep=pockets BULLY, can't "run over" the game" Translation: Since there is a cap to the rake, we have no financial motivation to spread REAL no limit. We don't want the live ones, to loose a month's poker playing money, to some professional player, on the first day of the month. It is bad public relations, for anyone to lose their home or life's savings, on our site. We could care less, about the traditions of poker, and have invented this "one shot" game, to appease the mass hysteria for no limit, while protecting our own financial interests. Why should we provide a feeding ground, for the good players. But, we don't want to admit this, so we invent the rediculous story, about the "well, someone could buy in for 10,000 and put it in EVERY HAND, and bully people around"

THIS IS THE BIGGEST DAMN LIE, OF ALL

answer for Ben

Postby AdamtheExpert » Mon Dec 06, 2004 1:04 am

Well, let's preface this response, by reminding everyone that max buy in games, are NOT no limit.

With this in mind, I'll proceed

In a limit game, you have more opportunites for profit, but usually won't make as much on each one. Sometimes, the profit from no limit, may take weeks or months to acheive.

Sometimes, you must set someone up, for a LOOOOOONG time, making clever tricks to eventually get his whole stack.

Yes, personality plays a BIG role, in selecting which game is right for you.

No limit, requires more talent, more experience, and something that no one can teach you: . . . . . . .INSTINCT!!

There are more bad beats in limit, but then you also will get to draw to your good draws more.

Limit games, can be played without having any player notes, just going on how the average person plays. Mistakes are not as costly, and you don't really need great players notes, to win

Max no limit games, require that you have very good player notes, and you may have to observe the game for a while, before you can even play.

No limit, is much more boring, as there are many, many hands that you will not get to play, that you would in limit.

Powers of observation, are much more important in no limit, and much greater are the rewards.

My friends, the current trend towards the so-called no limit games that are featured today, is largely BUNK!! The casinos are just pandering to what the people THINK they want.

Prior to the internet and WPT, no limit had almost completly gone the way of the DODO.

There is a good reason for this. The live ones have NO chance, lose their money faster, and stop playing the game.

Putting a maximum buy in, will only serve to slow down this process a bit.

The live ones, will still go broke, and the games will eventually die out.

For right now, YES, I've seen some very good potential on the online games.

So, it's not really a bad thing, just one I don't expect will last

Can you imagine how much money would have been transfered from the live ones accounts, to the solid players, if Party poker had the kind of maximum limits, that UB does!!!

In fact, that's one of the only reasons why the games have lasted this long, the biggest site in the world, has nothing bigger than 200 max

Live ones, like to get some playing time in, for their money. They don't mind losing, as long as they get to play.

So, go ahead and learn no limit (if you have the talent) But plan on becomming good in limit to. This way, you will be able to play whatever form, is currently popular with the live players

I gotta add a couple of my personal fav.

1. I read super system think I understand it now I play all suited connectors for a flop, no matter what, than when I call a raise and flop 2 pair and bust AA, I praise Doyle for his god like poker knowledge.

2. Big chip stack = good player

3. Is position really important??????

4. But they were suited.
