Donk, donk, donk goes the stack!

Postby Stoneburg » Sun Aug 20, 2006 6:05 pm

Ok, donked off 4 full stacks at PLO100 on my new site this session. Fortunately I pulled in two stacks in Hold'em and made about as much playing LO8 on Party so I'm break even. Didn't tilt but may have an error in my adaption.

For the first hour I had the nuts every time I bet or raised, and did not get called once. So I figure hey, if they're not calling my bets I should probably start semi-bluffing. Sound theory? I think so. Unfortunately the only time tonight I actually DID get called was when I was semi-bluffing. Doh. Anyway, let's see if I screwed up these too badly:

#1
I've got [8h] [Jd] [Js] [10s] in EP and limp behind UTG, folded to the blinds who both play so we're 4 to the flop. Flop comes J52 with two diamonds. I pot it and only SB calls. Turn is the [Kd] so the flush got there. SB checks and I check behind. River is another K, SB bets out 12 I pot raise and he puts me in for another 23 and I call. I figure he must have had KJ and a flush draw so I call. Actually, turns our he had [8s] [9h] [Jc] [Kh]. I didn't find that out until I just checked the HH to copy his hand. Wow, guess you can call it a bad beat then. Anyway, let's just pretend he had a diamond draw so I can be happy. Is it bad to raise the river there?

#2
I've got AQ43 with the A suited to clubs in the BB and get a free peek. Flop is T65 with two clubs. I lead for 5 into a 4 player field (ie: pot size). Folded to MP who pops it to 20, folded back to me. I push... or try to, turns out I have 7 left. I get them in on the brick turn and he calls with 66 for middle set (exactly the sort of hand I thought I could get him to drop). I blame this one on BTP for some reason. Should I play the hand differently? Check/call flop? Check/raise?

#3
Now I only have 35 left. Not gonna reload because this is my last lap and I am bored with losing full stacks. Not tilting though. I just re-read Zen and The Art of Poke Her. I've got A986 with the club draw otb. Almost everyone limps and I raise pot to 8.50. Two callers. Flop comes 977 rainbow. Checked to me and I put my stack in. EP has a pretty easy call with AK99 and I am drawing dead. Figured only a 7 or 99 can call here and with me holding a 9 the top full should be rare. I'm guessing the mistake was popping it preflop?

So any patterns of donkness I should be aware of?

With this losing session my win rate at this site just dropped below 1 stack/hr. :(

1) I don't raise that river unless opponent is likely to lead with weaker hands and is foolish enough to call my raise with that. Against sane players, no raise.
2) Seems like a NLHE move. lead, reraise AI with flush draw. Unless you're up against someone who often gets aggressive with speculative hands, you probably don't have a lot of FE there...
3) I wouldn't raise pf with such a small stack. No implied odds, even negative implied odds, as you saw.

Hello,

Hand 1 and 3 I have to agree with Ojingo.Nothing much else to say. The raise on the river in hand 1 is ugly, really. When you get re-raised and read KJ I think even the call for the last 23 is dubious (sp). I could argue for a ½pot semi-bluff type of bet on turn unless he's the trappy, checkraise type but I'm at work so I don't have time to think it through

In hand 2, however, I think your play is (marginally) good. Against a set you're a 40/60 dog if we assume your idiot straight draw will be good so you don't need much FE here at all for this play to be at least break even. Against a hand like 5678 you're even money if he doesn't block any of your flush cards and you're a slight (55/45) favorite against a good looking hand like 6789 which I would probably play like your opponent did. Check-raising might allow you to get some more dead money into the pot so that might be marginally preferable. It would also be a good play for representing TT as it is a common way to play top set from EP (at least for me).
