I know you were heads up, but he was probably drawing, and if he had a flush, that is fine too. Kick out 250 or something. Makes the river push easier.

Meh, guess you are right. That was just the sexiest turn and I was looking to stack him on the river exactly like I did.

yes - need to bet the turn -

if he has the flush draw other than the ace even if it hits he won't necessarily call a big push on end
if his flush misses you are left with nothing
if he has overpair he is playing cagily he won't put any more if in the flush hits and won't be calling a push if it misses (as he will put you on an 8)



whichever way you look at it he will call a weakish bet on the turn - the pot is 450 so 200-250 looks right to me..looking like you too are on a flush draw..

You forgot one thing Excession

If the guy has a made flush already then a 4th diamond on the river could KILL the action.

The turn check was the best play. You made a small bet on the flop which was called. It didn't look like you had a monster, but he did. When you checked the turn, it looked like you were taking a stab at the pot on the flop after it missed you. Villain then bet for value on the river, thinking you wouldn't call anything else after the turn check. He must have been totally floored when you pushed. Of course he insta-called.

We know the results so it's easy to see that it wouldn't have mattered, but let's play it out like we didn't know.

If villain had a weak hand and he called on the flop, he may have something like at best a flush draw and perhaps a straight draw--less like given our cards, but possible. If he knows anything at all about pot odds, he didn't have 'em to draw here. Plus, he's OOP. I'd be smelling a rat.

So let's say he did have the made flush. A bet on the turn would maybe get all his chips, but much more likely on the river, if you're going to get them at all. You bet the flop and the turn which shows a lot of strength on that board. If he had a flush draw or a very small made flush, you might not get anything. The check is simply the better play.
