Well I both bought a house and put money into a PEP (tax free share scheme - now ISA's) in the 90's.
PEP went up by 2.7x; house went up by 3x (after deducting buying and sale costs).
Also you save rent of course.
Here in the UK with such pressure on housing stock investing in a house in any decent town or city is a no brainer really. Get a friend or two in to share the bills and pay something towards the mortgage (that's what I did - I bought with my best mate and we had 2 trainee nurses live with use as tenants - much cheaper than renting with a ready made social scene). Make sure it's a repayment mortgage too.
A good tip is to look at houses that are good for starter families - 3 bedroom semis in good condition are very easy to sell. I sold mine within 4 viewings...get a flat in an area that is oversupplied and and you can end up having a hard time trying to sell.
