Learning a new game - 7CS

Postby Stoneburg » Thu Nov 16, 2006 4:03 pm

Started out playing NLT, then Pot limit Texas, then PLO, LO8, Limit Hold'em and PLO8. Last night I jumped in the 7CS game to try and learn it and it seems fun.

I have not read anything specific at all about 7CS so here's a basic summary of my 3:d street (wrote "preflop" first) strategy and past that.

3:d street.

I tend to limp... (If I don't think it's gonna be raised)
3 to a flush
3 to a straight (haven't had that yet though)
Any split pair if others boards don't look threatening
An Ace unless I feel like raising and the other cards aren't total crap

I tend to raise (unraised pot)
If I am high carded and think I have any chance of picking up the ante
Really good draws like JQKs
Most of the time (not all) if I have an Ace showing and nobody else does
A decent split pair with a good kicker

I re-raise with
A bigger pair than what the raiser is repping, or if I feel he is stealing
Trips (haven't had that yet but in theory I would re-raise)

I call a raise with
A good 3 flush if my cards are live and pot odds are decent or an OESFD
Split pair and kicker bigger than the raisers door card

After this I basically try to figure out what my opponent has and play accordingly, raise when I think I am ahead, call when I think I have odds to chase (sometimes raise) and fold if I don't.

So far I actually feel like I have an edge, and I actually made some money my first time playing. Although I have very little knowledge of this particular game and no experience, I feel the opposition is extremely bad at reading hands, way too loose/passive and way too transparent/honest. So far the play has been very straight forward, making it easy to read people and play correctly. I did make a few quite bad plays but felt I was catching on rather quickly. There is usually only a few active tables but with suck soft competition I think it can be fun to learn.

Now I am looking for some good strategy and hopefully some feedback.

I am working on a low limit 7CS guide, with the input and assistance of a few people here. That having been said, Ill offer a few observations about your starting hand thoughts.

3 to a flush
Yes, you want to limp these as long as your suit is live. If there are 3 or more of your suit showing, you have to toss the hand

3 to a straight (haven't had that yet though)
Ok down to j109. Anything below that is not good. You have to count on making two pair and having it stand up from time to time to be +ev, and anything below this is not good.

Any split pair if others boards don't look threatening
Horrible habit. You will either get deep into hands with 1 pair/bad two pair or end up throwing a lot of hands on 4th/5th.

An Ace unless I feel like raising and the other cards aren't total crap
Again, really really bad habit, you are setting yourself up to be playing with 1 or 2 dead cards, which is not good.

I tend to raise (unraised pot)
If I am high carded and think I have any chance of picking up the ante
Only in late position. If you are doing this in 2nd or 3rd position, it is going to lose you money when you catch a pair that you cant get away from.

Really good draws like JQKs
Yep, keep at it.

Most of the time (not all) if I have an Ace showing and nobody else does
Again, you are setting yourself up to go deep into hands with not much.

A decent split pair with a good kicker
Depends whats up.

I re-raise with
A bigger pair than what the raiser is repping, or if I feel he is stealing
Depends on the read. Eventually you will get a feel for it, but dont get too raise happy. Just playing good cards can lead you to a pretty good win rate. The majority of the time when someone raises with a 4 and then 3 bets, it is AA or KK probably 90% of the time.

Trips (haven't had that yet but in theory I would re-raise)
I find that this is generally a -ev play. Rolled hands are generally the only hands that I will slowplay.

I call a raise with
A good 3 flush if my cards are live and pot odds are decent or an OESFD
If there are at least 3 people in the pot. HU this is a -ev play.

Split pair and kicker bigger than the raisers door card
Only from the bring in, otherwise this is an -ev play.

Ill post a bit more later. I have a party to go to.
