it means never risk more than 5% of your roll at a time (though that's obsolete now in the days of multitabling). It's where we get the 20x rule from...many of us go by the 10% rule meaning NEVER risk 10% in a game...we buy in for max 5%, then if we run it up so it represents 10%+, we sit out and open a new table. Also, 20x is a FR number, not 6max. 6max has far more variance so a lot of us go by 40+x...more if you're a pro and can't replace the BR. If you can replace it, things are diff again.
For multitabling, it's generally understood that 5% only applies to EACH table, not adding up all the tables...though Howard Lederer argues that you need to increase your roll by the square root of the number of tables you're playing.
I can't replace my roll since poker is my only income, I 7 table 100 6max and have a 50x roll.
