Early SNG hand

Postby Nashvegas » Wed Nov 10, 2004 2:33 pm

How would you play this hand:

You're dealt AcKc in the cutoff in the third hand of an SNG. Everybody still has about 800 chips left, you have 790 and have folded both of your first two hands.

UTG and UTG+1 limp, as they have done both of the first two hands. The next two players fold, and the next MP player raises it to 60 -- the first hand he's played so far this SNG. It folds to you and you reraise to 150. The button flat calls, it folds around to the MP who calls. The three of you see the button, each with about 740 remaining.

The flop is Qs 9c 7c. MP bets 175. What do you do?

Also, what would you do with a flop of Kd Th 3c?

In a SnG I agree with Iceman. In the first scenario, you have at least 9 outs, and possibly as much as 15 outs if your overcard outs are clean. When you make the big semi-bluff, several things can happen and many of them are good.

Especially in a SnG, where doubling (or trippling) up once can frequently be enough to coast you into the money. Personally I may have tried to play a slightly smaller pot by re-raising less pre-flop, but I don't think it's bad the way you described. If I bust out very early in a SnG I usually don't mind, as long as I played reasonable. This gives you a chance to move onto another game without investing a lot of time. I'm not advocating playing reckless, but if I am going to bust out of a SnG out of the money I would rather it happen early rather than later!

Iceman --

You'd be making a huge mistake calling an all in bet in a $10+1 Party SNG in that situation. You are almost certainly against a made hand (AKQ of the flush suit are out), and it's very very likely that either 3 or 6 of your 15 outs are no good. You are definitely an underdog to survive. With 3/4 of your stack remaining so early in the SNG I think you need to make that fold every time.

SNG value of survival is way higher than even an MTT. This is because even early in an SNG with a short stack, you can be assured of survival at least to the point where the blinds are 50/100, with only 8000 chips at the table. Blind steals here give you plenty of reason to fold now and survive so that you can be the aggressor later. Even when you do get called on a blind steal later, you're likely to have a similar chance to survive as you do in this example hand.

Why do you think it's a close call? I'm curious, because I certainly have things I need to learn about even my area of greatest knowledge.

If he's all-in I fold here - I've 1300 chips left and I can usually get my money in when I'm 2:1 favorite or better if I'm patient - this smells more like 1:2 to me.

Betting I would probably push all-in (as he has showed weakness) - but I'd be pretty uncomfortable about it. I wouldn't say that a flat call or smaller re-raise was necessarily awful in this spot.
