May Overview

Well, I'm sure you are all tired of me belly-aching about my losses last month. Well, hopefully, this month will work out a little better. There's a lot going on this month, and there definitely will be some trials for my online bankroll, but hopefully in the end I will come out ahead.

I am keeping the same plan for my online bankroll this month as last month, but there is a little bit of a catch to it. Since I am taking a fair amount out for Foxwoods for the 2nd weekend of May, if I lose the money there, I'm going to be "paying" that off first before I cash out my online winnings to myself. Its tough to explain really, but it will become clearer as I get closer to the time.

Also, by next Monday, I need to start cashing my money out just for that trip, so next week, my bankroll will be looking a little sparse - hopefully I won't hit a down swing at that time.

Since I need to withdraw the money starting next Monday (so it gets into Neteller and then into my checking account), I'm hoping to get the 3 cryptos done (Interpoker, PokerPlex and William Hill) at the very least. Right now, my bankroll among those three account for half of my online bankroll, but I will probably take a little out of UB as well, depending on how things go.

While my bankroll is out of commission, I will probably be playing mostly at GamesGrid because, while the games aren't very good, the bonus is - and it can withstand a lot of bad luck while my bankroll is out. It should be boosted almost right away with a $120 bonus from prop play there - so that it will go a long way.

Oh, and here's the bankroll plan:

Tier 1: For the first $200 profit in a given month, it all stays in the bankroll
Tier 2: For the next $200 profit, it is taken out into my savings for bills
Tier 3: For the next $600 profit, it is split evenly
Tier 4: Anything beyond $1000 profit is withdrawn completely.

And remember, this is only Online profit. I expect I'll be taking out $1000 for the weekend of the 13th and putting whatever is left on the 15th or 16th. If it turns out that I lost some of the initial stake, but still finish up for the month - anything I would normally have cashed out will be paid to the balance of the $1000 that I lost.

For instance, I cash out $1000 and bring back in $800. I finish the month up $700, so $200 would be kept in my bankroll, the next $200 would normally have been cashed out - but instead will be kept in the bankroll, and then the remainder is split among online and my account. So in this scenario, I'd only actually be cashing out $150.

Here are the stats for the last six months:

11/2004 51.067 hrs, $247.61, $4.849/hr
12/2004 54.533 hrs, $65.14, $1.194/hr
1/2005 78.850 hrs, $463.69, $5.881/hr
2/2005 66.767 hrs, $445.86, $6.678/hr
3/2005 71.850 hrs, $528.89, $7.361/hr
4/2005 88.467 hrs, $90.33, $1.021/hr

April is my black sheep and I will be happy to set it go away in six months. Hopefully, this month will be markedly better. My rolling hourly rate from November through April is $4.475/hr. Still below minimum wage, but for a little on the side, I can't really complain. I still hope that I will reach $10/hr soon - if only for a month.

Well, here goes another month - let's see how it turns out.

May 1st, 2005 (Sunday)

Busy day all around. Lindsay and I were going to be going to a timeshare sales pitch for the free junk, but we managed to leave later than expected, plus it was a little farther than we expected - so we just skipped it. However, since we were right on Route 2 in Connecticut anyway - we popped over to Foxwoods (all of 8 miles from where we were going...). We had intended on hitting Foxwoods anyways because we had some coupons to add Wampum points to our cards and we'd be in the area. Instead, we did that and also played a little. We didn't have enough time for poker, but we did put $20 each into a slot machine (she won $75, so the net was $35 from this) and we played a solid hour or two of Carribean stud at a $5 minimum table (the first I've ever seen) and walked away from that down about $80. The net between the two was $45 and with lunch at the hard rock (we had a coupon for it) the total was around $70 in the red. Oh well, we had a real good time being irresponsible. We were late picking up the kids from my brother and late to a birthday party afterwards - but we had a good time. As per usual non-poker related activity is not recorded on my win/loss for poker.

Anyway, we got home and put the kids to bed around 9:30 and I logged a little over an hour with 3 tables of 7-stud going. The tables were pretty loose, as can be expected. It could've been a monster night, but a guy I had pegged as a single pair hit trips on the river. It was a big pot because he was trying to represent a flush (the worst possible situation - he had three showing, I had 2 in the hole plus 2 showing and all of the others were folded off of other showing cards...). He hit his set on the river and took about $50 from the pot. He had another hit against me in the same vein (trying to represent something), but at least this time it was a possibility. Unfortunately for me, he caught perfect on the river to take the pot away again.

Still, I only finished down $1.50 at that table - and most of losses were overtaken by my winnings from him and the others... I have a few hands to review - but I'll post them in the Stud section.

Here's the numbers for the day:

IP 5/1 $90 deposit ($90 bonus, 8x hands (720 raked)) ($400.79)
IP 5/1 10:15pm $1/$2 Stud (8) $40 buyin, 11:23pm, 54 hands, -1.50 (table broke)

IP 5/1 10:18pm $1/$2 Stud (8) $40 buyin, 11:40pm, 51 hands, +75.50
$463.54

May 2nd, 2005 (Monday)

I'm looking forward to getting home tonight and find out exactly how much I got from GamesGrid last week. It should be right around $120 - which will be a nice addition for the month right off the bat. I'm working on the Interpoker bonus plus the HORSE tournament. I'll probably have 2 tables at Interpoker and one at Full Tilt with the tournament until it finishes or I get knocked out. Once it does, I'll pick up a third table at Interpoker. Since I expect I probably have ~120 hands raked so far, I am hoping to get another 180-250 done tonight. With 3 tables of stud, that wouldn't be too difficult.

Before I go home tonight, I'm meeting Lindsay and the kids at the mall to get a cell phone. I hate the damned things, but it is becoming more and more evident that it would be not only convenient but also more efficient if I did. Twice this weekend, I ended up driving 20 miles out of the way (each way - so that's 80 extra miles...) because Lindsay couldn't get in touch with me. Just in gas alone, that's running me about $8 - but like I said this is just something I've been putting off. The extra expense of the phone will be somewhere in the $20-30/month range - which should be manageable.

Not too long ago, I found out my withholding from my paycheck was set up incorrectly and had been for some time. Since I got a $6k return this year, I decided it might be nice to have that spread out on my paychecks rather than the big lump at the end - hopefully making it so I don't have to worry anymore... in any case, I've adjusted it from 0 exemptions to 9. This has made a difference of ~$180 on my take home pay. $6k over 24 payments in a year is $250 - so I expect I'll still have enough leeway to get a reasonable check back at the end of the year. In order to adjust my withholding to the correct amount, I would need to take into account estimated interest on my mortgage and such - so it could definitely be refined - but this way I have a little cushion when I claim the poker winnings on the taxes this year.

One thing I really like about playing 7-Stud is the fact that I can get up whenever I am ready to be done - rather than my self-imposed obligation to play until the blinds. Why does this matter? Well, I'll tell my wife I'm coming to bed once the blinds show up and three hands later - she's already asleep. Now - I say I'm coming to bed and get immediately up from the computer. Its a small difference, but one that she appreciates very much.

Unofficially, I'm hoping to bring my bankroll to around $2500 before I withdraw for my trip to Foxwoods. Right now it is sitting around $1850 - so that would be a big step up. However, in reality it isn't that bad. I'm expecting ~$120 from GamesGrid today. The cryptos will be another $90, $50 and $47.55. That brings me up to around $2200 - so I'll just need to bust my ass picking up the remainder. I might try to finish off the bonus at Ultimate Bet or maybe Empire will put up a bonus in the next day or two to make it happen. The only problem on this one is that the money isn't really available to make a quick deposit onto Empire - so I don't know if that will work in the time frame I've got. Wednesday is probably as late as I could go for this and still have the money ready for Monday.

Somewhere in the mix of things, I'll need to put in my 10-hours minimum at GamesGrid - but that isn't too much of a trouble and will be even easier with the extra $120 tonight. 3-tabling $2/$4 has been a little tight with only $260 on the site, anything less than that and I have to play 2 tables. The bonus amount will bring me to ~$350 - so that should be plenty to play with on 3 tables. Now I just need to take a night and work on that bonus. The bonus clearing over there is atrociously slow - and I don't know if it would get better if I moved up to $3/$6. I won't be moving up yet, but it might be a consideration after Foxwoods.

(Continued)

I can't believe I missed the HORSE tournament. I was running a little behind and then got stuck behind a couple of trucks that wanted to do 15MPH in a 40MPH zone... Heads will roll. I guess for next week I'll just have to register beforehand. Anyway, it wasn't a total loss - I actually had quite a good night last night.

To start with, it was my brother-in-law's 18th birthday, so I transferred him $25 to his Pokerstars account to play around with as part of his gift.

Okay - onto the rest of things. First, I received my VFP payment of $135.41 (slightly higher than I expected). That's always a nice start to my Monday night... I didn't play on the site last night because they only had seats open at $3/$6 and I didn't feel like trying to wait for a seat. Instead, I decided to continue on my run at Interpoker.

I'm glad I did. In general, I try to keep 3 tables up at all times. However, the stud tables were very volatile last night, so I think I played most of the time with only 2 up at a time because one was breaking. Regardless, any time a table broke, I was up at least a little, so it was a nice night overall. I didn't note any hands in particular, but I will say that I just played solidly for the most part with one suckout near the end when I drew to an inside straight on the river with a guy showing a pair of aces (I had queens as well, but I suspected 2-pair wouldn't be enough). Turns out I was real lucky since he had trips - but I caught on the river for a nice pot. I may have had the implied odds by the time he hit his trips (on 6th) to hit just the gutshot - but I'll just go ahead and say that I probably didn't. It was a bad call. But it paid off for me this time...

I play just over 300 hands of stud last night, so I'm probably past the half-way point on the number of raked hands I need to release the $90.

May 4th, 2005 (Wednesday)

Actually, looking over the sessions at Interpoker, it seems I have player 681 hands of 7-Stud. I would frankly be very surprised if I have less than 550 raked hands right now and I think 600 is pretty likely. If I play tonight, I'll probably play 3 tables there for another 200 hands and see if the bonus unlocks. If not, I'll just play one table there for another hour at a time until it does and have my other two tables at Games Grid to finish grabbing the hours for the VFP program.

If I can get the Interpoker bonus out of the way early tonight and get a little more time on at Games Grid, I'll probably pop onto William Hill for an hour or two as well to see about knocking that bonus out. If not, William Hill can wait until Thursday and PokerPlex on Friday or Saturday.

Games Grid actually has been ranking lower and lower on my sites to play for a number of different reasons. A friend of mine commented that he felt they came out before things were done - and he's certainly right. In this day and age - there's no reason for a site not to have wait lists. I think it is the same way for hand histories, though Games Grid is not the only failure there (Full Tilt being another that comes to mind). I have made my official decision to be done with Games Grid once the major VFP program is completed (end of this week). I may be throwing away $2800 in bonus money - but it is so difficult to release that I have a better expectation elsewhere almost all of the time.

Its too bad, because I really felt that Games Grid would be a solid place if they were able to live up to what they were saying (quick updates, quick growth). I just can't see them growing without fixing the major things and removing some of the incentives to play there.

Its just as well though, I was looking to pick up some more of the Crypto sites anyway and their monthly bonuses have me pretty well tied up at the beginning of the month and up to about half-way. Add in a bonus from Stars or Empire or even UB and I've got my month filled up. And when I don't have anything better to do, I always have the bonus at Full Tilt to work off.

(Continued)

Good things continue. One thing I can say is that I still have my occasional horrible play. For instance, I was playing on GamesGrid last night and open-raised from MP with KJs (as a bluff, pretty standard on this table). The player on my left reraises and it folds back to me.

I call his reraise and see a 10-high flop with 2 diamonds (my suit). The flop also gives me a gutshot straight draw. I check, he bets and I call. The turn is a deuce (pairs the board), so I lead out and he raises... hmmm. I call. The river makes my flush - I bet into him again and he calls. I take the pot. While it wasn't the best play by me, I felt he could certainly be pushing overcards in this situation - and even AT is a possibility. He claims he had aces - which is fine with me. I know I made the wrong call - and that's why I ended my session right there. He probably felt I was hit-and-running. The truth is I recognized that I needed to be done - so I felt leaving was an extremely strong play on my part.

In any case, I played a $3/$6 table at GamesGrid and has 2 tables at Interpoker open at all times last night. At GamesGrid I finished down $1 (plus $5 after the bonus I unlocked). At Interpoker, I finished up about $50, but with my $90 bonus unlocked - it was another really good night for me.

I need to put in another 3 table-hours at GamesGrid before Sunday and I want to start and finish the bonuses at PokerPlex and William Hill before I'm done on Friday. I may only get one night to play out of tonight and Friday though - so it just may not happen.

My online bankroll is just below $2300 now - edging ever closer to my $2500 goal by Monday:

May 5th, 2005 (Thursday)

I have about a 50% chance of playing any poker tonight. Lindsay wanted to go to a local carnival either tonight or tomorrow night, which I said was fine. However, the weather, while clear, is supposed to be a little on the chilly side and since the kids are just getting over colds, we may elect to just wait until the next one.

Obviously, I'm real happy with the way poker has treated me since the beginning of the month (and the end of last month for that matter). I'm now sitting on a bankroll of $2299 online and have breached the $4000 in profits mark, $2000 of which has been since January 1st alone. While I know I'm not playing perfectly, I'm making the right kinds of decisions to help my game.

Well, I just heard about the Pokerstars bonus, which I should've expected was coming. With the money I want to start withdrawing on Monday, I'll need to be moving around about $1600 to take care of the two items. I'll transfer the money out of Interpoker tonight ($738) and use that for the deposit into Pokerstars. Then I'll play on PokerPlex and William Hill and knock those out by Monday. If the two of those won't cover it all, by Monday I should be all set on GamesGrid and can cash out my money from there.

It'll be nice to get back onto Pokerstars. I haven't played there in just about a month, but I always did fairly well and it still is the site with the best interface, in my opinion.

Of course, if Empire takes up a bonus, there will be more scrambling around (probably taking my money out of Full Tilt and Ultimate Bet) - but this is the first time that my bankroll was big enough to handle all of this action. And it surely is nice that it can...

Good luck to anyone playing tonight.

(Continued)

Good things continue some more. I actually thought that tonight was going to be a bust or even a small loss (after the bonus from William Hill), but near the end of my night, everything seemed to be coming together. While at William Hill, I only played stud and finished the bonus ($47.40) with 249 hands played.

For the most part, the hands I lost significantly on where just bad plays by me. For instance, I have four to a straight flush showing and keep raising heads up with a guy who is showing a pair of sevens. While I could have the straight flush - I don't - I only have the flush. It turns out he has a full house that is very well hidden. I kept shaking my head at that one.

In any case, I cashed out my money from Interpoker and part of my bankroll at William Hill to be able to be prepared for the withdrawals for next week and for the two bonuses from Pokerstars and Empire. It appears UB is doing a bonus as well, but it is for Firepay users only and I'm not setting up an account just for that.

Tonight, Lindsay and I are probably going to the drivein - which means a late night for me. Its fine though, because my bankroll has almost crested $2400. About the drivein - I can't express how happy I am that it is open again for the season. I'm not real fond of movie theatres and paying exorbitant prices to see a movie. In general, during the winter I really only have one option and it is a small theatre in Franklin which charges something like $4-6 per ticket. To contrast, a Friday night at Bellingham is $12/ticket - and then a small popcorn is $5... The Franklin Zeotrope is just the way to go.

However, with the drivein, I get to see two movies from the comfort of my car (and it is more comfortable than the movie theatre) for the cheap price of $20 - for the whole car. Tonight, for instance, it will be Lindsay, myself, our two kids and Lindsay's younger sister. $20 - and then a large popcorn for all of us would be in the range of $4. Add to that the fact that the drivein is all of 1 mile from my house and it is a PRIME option...

Well, anyway, here's the stats from last night. I sincerely hope that this streak continues until I'm done at Foxwoods...

May 9th, 2005 (Monday)

Well, today's the day I start moving money around and into my home account. I'm expecting about $120 from GamesGrid again, which will mean I can withdraw $600+ from there. I will also take my money out of UB temporarily, so I can take advantage of the Empire bonus.

I've heard plenty of rumours about Empire locking accounts that only take advantage of the bonuses. Some have said they are trying to weed out the bonus chasers - which is fine. I only go there during bonus times because I don't like the software enough to play there regularly. I'm leaving Games Grid because they are changing their terms - I'll have no problems leaving Empire if they come back and tell me I haven't been a good customer.

What it comes down to is I will only play at a site that I like on a regular basis. GamesGrid got around this by offering their prop program - once the conditions changed, it wasn't as worth it to me. This means that if no site was offering a bonus, I'd probably stick with PokerStars almost exclusively, with some Full Tilt in there for my Razz fix.

Honestly, I'm not sure what would happen to the online-poker world if bonuses were removed wholesale. It would be a tough sale to get anyone to deposit as a new player and I imagine the sites would dry up pretty quickly, unless they have impressive peddigrees (like Pokerstars' back-to-back WSOP wins). I know the bonuses have been accelerating my growth into new limits, but at the same time, I could live without them.

Well, tonight is the HORSE tournament and unfortunately, I haven't signed up yet - so if I am running late, I'm apt to miss it again. However, I don't think it is likely I'll be running that late tonight.

I was a little disappointed with the stud games at PokerStars I played on Sunday. Granted it was the middle of the day, but I thought they were a lot tighter than they needed to be - and that is probably the reason I ran over them in the 15 minutes I played there. I'll check out the games again when it is more of a prime time to play, but most likely I'll just return to Omaha for a little while. I've been itching to play some more Omaha lately anyway...

I'm truly amazed at how things have been going for me the last few months in terms of poker. At January 1st, I had posted a total profit of just under $2k and had an online bankroll of just over $500. I posted record winnings in January, February and March and then an off-month of April (where my winnings were similar to the way they had been for most of 2004), and now I'm on a tear that I just can't believe. In fact, I'm amazed that I was planning the Foxwoods trip back then when things seemed a little bleak for my bankroll...

In fact at the start of the month, I was still a little gun-shy about taking out $1000 to use at Foxwoods. At the time, it left me with under $1000 in my account and would make it difficult to play $2/$4 comfortably. Now I'm looking at still having $1500 in my online account which is still healthy enough that I could lose the entire stake of what I'm bringing and still play $2/$4.

I'm still trying to figure out what would be the best way to go about playing at Foxwoods this weekend. On Friday, I might go down really early in the morning and play the $80+20 tournament. If I don't, I'll plan to show up right around noon and find some tables to play on - hopefully Omaha or Stud - though Hold'em would be fine I guess.

The tournament is still a question though. I'm not sure if its worth putting up 20% of my weekend stake on a shot at such a big amount. I don't know the field, I've rarely played live (though when I have, I've felt comfortable and at home) and never NL hold'em live. If I did play, I'm not expecting to win anything (I'd say my chances of making it to the money is about 15%), so if I chose to play it, I'm pretty much starting out the weekend down $100.

There's also the possibility of playing one of the ACT I tournaments during the weekend - and for what its worth, I think these will be easier for me to commit to - just because it is a smaller buyin ($60 total I think). The main negative here is the fact that it just gets me into another satellite and then that gets me into a third satellite... however, I might just give it a try anyhow.

I am hoping to play in some live tournaments so that when I do have the cash - I can choose to play a live event at the NEPC or the World Poker Finals - or even something at Vegas if I ever manage to get there.

Well, this warmup has gotten a little on the long side... Good luck to everyone in the HORSE tournament tonight - see you there

(Continued)

Well, last night clearly wasn't my night and reaffirms that I need someone to temper me when I play. This usually means that when my wife is out with a friend of hers, I will play until all hours of the morning with no regard for work or family. This is clearly an issue I have and I am working on bettering it. Last night, I failed miserably and logged no less than 5 hours starting at 9pm. This morning I am tired and irritable because I was stupid for staying up too late trying to get even...

I'm sure I'll be posting some hands today because I know there are a few I have questions about, though I imagine some will be just plain bad play on my part and others will be plain bad beats.

Luckily, even with a horrible night at the tables, I only netted a loss of $150 - which I consider a major positive point since at one table I was down $320...

Here's the numbers from the day, hands will come later:
