Running it up (Party time)

Postby Stoneburg » Mon Mar 05, 2007 2:54 pm

When my regular swedish site was down the other day I loged onto Party Poker. I cashed out of there half a year ago, but my friend had an account with $35 on it so I decided to try and run that up a bit.

After playing a short and rather boring session (which I describe here: http://livepokerforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23255 ) I decided to see if I could run this money up a bit, to say... $1000?

Now in order to make it interesting I came up with a single rule I have to stick to:

All the money must be in play all the time

Then I made up another rule...

The first session described in the link above was played on 4 NL $10 tables and netted me ~$10 in an hour or so.

The second session was yesterday, and I will make seperate posts for very session from now on where I describe what I have played, any interesting hands, and the difference to the bankroll.

Starting Bankroll: $35

Turns out I'm not allowed at the beginner tables anymore! I won't miss that rock garden. For session two I decided to put the $45 down on two 0.5/1 LO8 tables.

Limit Omaha eight-or-better is probably the game I enjoy the most. Not neccesarily the one I am best at (I would say that Hold'em SnG's are probably my strongest game) but I really like playing it. Of course it is more fun when you win, like today.

Started out playing my normal game, which is pretty tight preflop and a bit passive post flop. Was doing OK but players started dropping out. Pretty soon one of the tables were down to three-handed. My main expeerience at playing shorthanded comes from playing LO8 sit-and-go's since I stick to full ring cash games, but I figured what the hell.

One of my opponents didn't adjust at all to begin with and was playing way too tight/passive for a shorthanded game, actually folding the BB to most of my button raises. I was pretty much raising on the button every hand and BB would fold something like 75% of the time (which is obviously way too much).

The SB however was much different. He was playing semi-loose and very aggressive. I would raise OTB and he would often 3-bet me (which is a good play imo) or call me and try to take it away post flop. I got a pretty good read on him and started adjusting rather quickly. He would play very aggressive on the flop, betting, check/raising or 3-betting a lot, but slow down on the turn, so I started making my moves on the turn, floting him a lot on the flop and stealing it on the turn. Out of position I would sometimes check/call the flop and check/raise the turn with air and he would fold.

The tricky player got tired of me pushing him around and left so I was heads up against the previously weak/tight player who now seemed to start steaming. Suddenly he started betting and raising every other hand, and I started calling him down light. In this final hand I guess I must have gotten to him because this is pretty much as bad as it gets...

Todays session I decided to use a shortstack system I invented a while back. I started out at the NL $50's and was trying to have 7 tables up and running at all times. I would buy in for 20BB and then pretty much fold or push until I am broke or stack >32BB in which case I leave the table and start a new one.

After a while I was up too much for me to be able to do only NL $50 tables in order to keep all the money in play all the time(tm) so I had to start up some $100 tables as well. When I finished I had 3 NL $100 and 4 NL $50 tables running and was up $126 in a little more than an hour. It's a dirty job, but the money is good.

Here's what some of the junk they called me with...

TT vs A7s + 99 (99 flat called, A7s overcalled my push, flop brings an A, I lose)
AK vs K5 (He limp/called my push UTG, hits a 5. Duh!)
99 vs JT + KQs (KQs limps UTG, I push OTB, SB cold calls with JT and KQs makes a nice overcall and rivers a Q)
33 vs K7 (I open-push OTB, he just calls in the SB, I flop a set and drag)
AQ vs KTs (Another cold caller of my EP push, I get no respect but I get the money)
QQ vs KK (one of the two times I was actually behind preflop, I flop a set :) )

My stats (450 hands):

vpip: 10%
Pfr: 7.3%
BB/100: 21

Result: +$126

Bankroll: $204

Session 6:

Started up 9 Sit and Go's, from $11 to $33. Ran like fecal matter. Not counting two tables (where I ran good) I did not win a single coinflip or suck out at any time. The few hands I won I was a favorite or took it down uncontested. I would lose all AK vs Q9 and AQ vs K9 hands by default.

At one table I managed to suck out once though, all-in with 76s against ATo I hit a flush, and at the other every other hand was a good starting hand. It started out with me getting TT on the button, there was an EP raise who picked up 3 callers. If you don't squeeze here, you shouldn't be playing tournaments. I push, everyone folds. The very next hand I get KK, another EP makes a miniraise and gets a caller. I figure I will push again hoping it looks like I am tilting, and get called by KJo. Nihan!

All in all it sucked. I cashed in those two, well, won them that is, but didn't place ITM in any of the other. So, two wins and 7 bust-outs should equal profit, right? Well not if you decide to run good at the two $10 tables and get turds thrown in your face at the others.

Result: -$54

Current BR: $121

Gosh... seems to be a lot of variance when you have your whole BR on the table, who would have thought it.
