Brunson' style from UPF

Postby Danhdan » Wed Nov 10, 2004 3:53 pm

There was a thread on UPF about Brunson's aggressive style. Iceman, you mentioned in the thread that his particular style will not work in today's online games...But, I think if you are up against weak competition who are looking to show their money in, then some of his ideas still are viable.
The part I read last night(I am in a five month reading of Super System right now, one idea at a time) was Betting out into the raiser. You mentioned this as well at one point...I thought I had taken the idea from something that you mentioned.
PP NL $25: I had 99 and limped in UTG+1, MP limped, and the button raised to $2. Not a firm read on button, but I felt he could be raising on and ace w/ high kicker, and probably big slick or AQ. He raised $3 a couple of times from other positions with PP's, and also didn't mind pushing his stack in when he was the raiser or at least playing for alot. I had $40 and button had $33.

I called the raise, as did MP. 3 to the flop, $6.50 in pot. Flop came [As][9s][8d].

I decided to bet out, and bet $4 into the pot...basically a bet looking for a raise. MP folded and button didn't even think about it and raised to $15. Preflop, I put him on a big ace, and not I was certain of it...didn't think he had KQspades or a pocket pair. I also think he might of been putting me on the flush draw, so I decided to push all-in hoping for a call. He called instantly, and when board paired another eight on the turn, I took it down...he had the AK I was hoping for.

This is one of my favorite flops when I suspect someone on a big ace, and I am planning on betting out into preflop raisers with this hand in the future until it stops working...I like the fact that it works really well in NL 25 because the stacks or so small, and people aren't willing to give up TPTK, and want to brawl with big slick...

Still don't understand how he throws away a set yet, still haven't evolved to that point, hard to toss that kind of hand away.

In my opinion Super System is the best book ever written for NL cash game play. When I said that some of the plays he makes wont work in todays online games, I was mainly referring to pushing draws so hard. There are too many online players who call too much. They wont fold their top pair when you try to push with your draw. Its better to just push your good hands and let them make mistakes by calling. In Doyles games, the money was very deep with no maximum buy in so people were afraid to call a huge bet with just top pair.
The absolute, without a doubt, hands down best play in that book is leading into the raiser with a set. I busted a guys AA with my flopped set of tens in a $400NL game this morning by leading into him.
You played the hand perfectly. Good job!

Laying down a set

Postby Jason D » Wed Nov 10, 2004 7:09 pm

This goes back to the abount of money on the table. In the book he says he will let one go in an unraised pot if he gets raised a significant amount of money like $1000 in the pot and a guy raises you like $15k...then you would probably put him on a set with a J42 board with no raise before the flop. He is also talking about reasonable opponents--someone who wouldn't risk that much $ with just top pair. In some instances you would pay him off same as if you had the ignorant end of a straight. If you had $2000 left in front of you and there was $1000 in the pot you would almost have to pay it off, but if there was $1000 in the pot and he raised you $20000, you would be much more hard pressed to call.

I'm glad.

I'm glad I don't play any good people.

Your point about people not folding, not giving up TPTK describes most I play with...I have only encountered one person who was a preflop raiser, and folded to my checkraise w/ a set at NL 25. And no one who has let go of top pair if I bet into them...hopefully my bankroll will increase, so I can continue practicing these manuevers I'm reading about...although, I do not think I have pushed a draw yet...still waiting for the nuts or close to it to bet.

Thanks for clarifying your position...and thaks for the responses.

I think this play works great at the lower limit as most players will credit you with AK, AQ or AJ when you call that raise. I think in that situation because you called his raise the 99 goes straight under the radar and the only hand he puts you that is scary is AA. Since you didn't reraise he thinks AA is unlikley so pushes. I will admit that 99 is my lucky hand since when you hit a flop like that its a bankrupter.

I will admit I've not done the whole lead out bet that much, I fully intend to have some fun with it though and will report back! Thanks guys.

Part of the reason why some of his hyper-aggressive plays wouldn't work online is because of the max-buyin rule. When you only get 50xBB to play with, there is really no way you are gonna be able to bluff a healthy pot on the river, or push your draws hard enough on the flop and turn to make your opponent fold a hand. Nobody is that afraid to lose $50 or $100. When you play higher stakes with an unlimited buy-in, then you can certainly use an aggressive style to your benefit by making your opponent play for all his chips.
