Help me, NL player lost playing limit

Postby Rhound50 » Mon May 23, 2005 6:57 pm

Ok so I went to my normal casino to play Nl; and the game hadnt started and there were only 3 people on the board so I decided to try my hand at limit. Here are a couple of hands. Ok first this is a increadbly loose table, 7 or 8 people to a flop is pretty normal. $3/$6 game

Hand 1- On the button with [Ac] [Qs] utg raises to $6, 5 limpers in front of me, I call both blinds call flop is 7 way, $42 in the pot. Flop is [Kc] [Jh] [8c], utg bets, 2 or 3 callers to me. I have the backdoor nut draw and a gut shot, so I call. Turn [10c] kind of a good card, but I could be behind a flush. UTG bets again 1 caller, I raise, figuring someone with a made flush is going to raise and i can check call the river if I miss. Only preflop raiser calls. River bings another club I now have the nuts, it checks to me I bet, my opponant calls with AK.

Hand 2. I look down at JJ in the SB, 6 limpers to me. I dont know what to do here so I just call, 1065 flop, should be good for my hand I think but I dont know what the hell to do so I decide to check raise. I check one bettor 2 callers, I raise. everyone calls board pairs 4 on the turn. I bet and get one caller who had A10. Like the way I played this?

When I play NL I feel like I know what going on at all times and I know what I want to do almost without thinking every time. I felt really lost playing limit. I guess the only good news is the other players were so bad, I may have been the best player at the table while feeling like I had no idea what was going on.

Hand 1 - I'm not sure if you put down the flop right, it doesn't give you a gutter, it gives you second pair...so it's kinda hard to analyze. If you have the cards right, then you have second pair, a gutter, and the nut-flush-draw on the turn, so calling would be in order I think.

Hand 2 - A raise is probably best, but I think it's debatable. At any rate, I think calling out of the SB is okay. On the flop, a check-raise seems risky, but with that many people, I think it's the way to go. Rest is fine.

The J on the flop magically turned into a Q didnt I mention that part?? They have special magical cards. Seriously though I fixed, I did have a gutshot and backdoor nut flush.

Okay. Flop call is fine then, turn raise is good too. You beat everything but the flush...yeah, someone might have it, but the Ac in your hand makes this less likely, and of course you have the nut redraw backing you up.

Rhound,

Seems like they were played fine to me.

Hand 1 - Don't see how you could have played it differently. The turn raise is probably safe with the class of players you seemed to be up against.

Hand 2 - I like the flop check-raise. But I would have definitely value-raised pre-flop - sure, you'd be likely to get a lot of callers, but JJ is still reasonably strong, especially against weak-loose opponents. The undercards on the flop were a pretty good thing for you, and so the check-raise would serve you well to protect your hand. I think there were plenty of people to provide you some action to be able to pull off the CR. If you raise preflop and the flop comes with overcards, you can always slow down and check-call it.

Where did you find this lot of gimps? I need to play there! :-P

OK, so Brian's got so good points against raising pre-flop - basically, what I would have to weigh is whether or not I wanted to pay two bets to potentially fold to overcards or an otherwise scary-looking flop. From the description of these other players, there's not much chance any of them was thinking about odds - they were all likely thinking "lemme see the flop, lemme see the flop!" Also, given a large multiway pot, even though *they* might not know anything about odds, obviously *you* do, and you don't want to make it more costly to stay in the game, so I can see the call.

I still think I would have raised, though. :D Only because I'm pretty certain that sooner or later, I'd win those two bets back (and then some) before long.

Anyway, well, I live in TX (where we have *NO* casinos... or like 2, total, I think), and am probably not going to get to go to the SD area any time soon... it's too bad, too, cuz I could use a few extra bucks. :-P
