A set on a flush board

Postby iceman5 » Wed Dec 15, 2004 1:43 pm

OK, its $100NL at Stars. I limp UTG with 33. There a couple more limpers and the flop comes 5 way.
Pot is $5. The flops comes [Kd][3d][8d]. Checked to me and I bet $5. MP raises to $15. (He started the hand with $50.). Damn! I call
Pot is $35. The turn is the [4d]. I check. He bets $10. He has another $25 so I check raise him all in. He raised the flop so he doesnt have an ace high flush. Other wise he wouldve just called my flop bet. I think he has a low flush. He cant call my check raise without the [Ad] or maybe the [Qd]. If he does call, I have outs to the full house.

Who likes / dislikes this play?

I personally don't like the play. Whenever someone posts a hand questioning the strength of a set of 8s on a board of 8-9-10 with two of a suit everyone tells them that if they don't do their best to get all their money in on the flop then they are nuts. Are you playing this differently (not putting him all in when he raises you) because a flush is out there and people are more likely to limp with suited cards than connected cards?

I also don't give most people enough credit to fold a low flush. Yes there are 4 diamonds out so if he flopped a flush he can't like it, but a lot of players will call you and "pay you off" anyways. In addition, your opponent has invested $26 of his stack so far in the pot and only has another $25 in front of him. I would think this makes a call much more likely. You are getting about 3.5-1 on his $10 bet (I think) to call here and try to make a boat, so why not flat call and try to hit it--less expensive than when you put him all in, pray, and lose (if he has a diamond) and you might take the rest of his stack if you boat and put him all in on the river anyways.

I didnt reraise the flop because I was almost positive he had the flush so theres no folding equity at all. When he raised me the pot was $25 and it was $10 to me. He gave me good odds to draw so I called.
At the turn he gave me good odds again so I couldve just called but I think the added folding equity makes the check raise a good play, but I think its very close to whether a call is better.

If you're sure he had the flush on the flop, and wasn't making a move with the [Ad], then I like this all in. $10 says to me he doesn't feel good about his hand.

I'd feel better though if he had $35 more rather than $25 more.

I was sure he had the flush and was also sure I would get the remainder of his stack if I filled up.
I agree with Norton that the play is alot better if he has more in his stack when I make the check raise. I was afraid he would call because in his mind he wasnt risking all that much more money.
However, this the exact same way I wouldve played the hand if I had the [Ad]. Only a fool would call there with a low flush, but unfortunatly he was a fool and called my raise with his [9d][5d], and I didnt fill up.
I couldve saved $25 by just calling, but I think theres enough folding equity to make it a decent play. Not my favorite of all time by any means.
