I think it is always a good idea for players to try out new things and new ideas at the tables because it's the best way to expand your game and become better at adjusting to the table instead of having a preset strategy. So I would definitely see if you can tweak the way you are playing tight and see if it can be improved rather than scrapped all together. Try posting a few hands and maybe you can get a few pointers.

Also, by playing tight I don't think anyone means "fold everything but Aces or Kings until the blinds get high". Position is a huge part of it. For example, at a full table I often fold hands like AJ, KQ and 66 or lower when in EP. When you get into middle and late position you can open up a lot. I think HoH explains this fairly well. Have you read volumes 1 and 2?

You really need to play the tables. On loose passive tables, limp in a lot and take a lot of cards off for min bets on flops. Do some stealing when no one shows too much interest.

On tight aggressive tables you need to be tighter preflop and a little more aggressive post flop.

On loose aggressive tables you can sit back a little more and wait for the big hands.

It is all about knowing the value of your hand vs your opponents. I have had tourneys where I have kicked ass (like cheap turbors) playing 40+% of my hands early.

After reading some stuff by William Chen and Paul Phillips (Raymer too) I think that early on is a lot like a cash game in larger field MTTs. Doubling your chips is close to doubling your equity in the tourney (possibly even better).

I am not a big time tourney winner, but I have done well in the low limit MTTs when I choose to play them but take it for what you think it is worth.
