I think it is always a good idea for players to try out new things and new ideas at the tables because it's the best way to expand your game and become better at adjusting to the table instead of having a preset strategy. So I would definitely see if you can tweak the way you are playing tight and see if it can be improved rather than scrapped all together. Try posting a few hands and maybe you can get a few pointers.
Also, by playing tight I don't think anyone means "fold everything but Aces or Kings until the blinds get high". Position is a huge part of it. For example, at a full table I often fold hands like AJ, KQ and 66 or lower when in EP. When you get into middle and late position you can open up a lot. I think HoH explains this fairly well. Have you read volumes 1 and 2?
