With respect to the first hand, I think you played it fine. That's sort of my standard way to play it, but lately I've been betting the flop a little more because you get stuck in an annoying guessing game later when you check.

Notice that JJ and KK are fairly different here. With JJ you have 8 cards (all the kings and queens) that could potentially beat your jacks if you give a free card, whereas KK doesn't have any overcards to fear.
