My NL short handed foray, turn bet analyses

Postby piersmajestyk » Mon Dec 20, 2004 10:48 pm

Well after spinning my wheels for about 2 weeks at the limit tables I have decided to head back to the NL tables for a little while and see how it goes. Already made a nice score at Pstars in the 100 NL games and a better one at the Party scene. Although I really dislike the 50 BB max at Party I still have some bonuses to clear.

This table is very loose with alot of QUESTIONABLE plays being made and money moving around farily rapidly. I had just doubled up when I flopped top set on this flop 932 after a preflop raise and a guy was kind enough to put me all in with his 66.

My next big hand was KK UTG with a late poster. I make it 8.00 to go and get called by the button and both blinds which I really don't like. I really hate making prelop raises first in bigger than 4 times the BB but I also hate getting called by multiple people with my big pairs. Hand follows:

$100 NL Hold'em - Monday, December 20, 23:07:17 EDT 2004
Table Table 14186 (6 max) (Real Money)
Seat 4 is the button
Total number of players : 6
Seat 3: foldonriver1 ( $157.6 )
Seat 6: Wild23 ( $148.35 )
Seat 8: kramer1993 ( $177.05 )
Seat 10: leo666 ( $276 )
Seat 1: ME ( $195.2 )
Seat 5: danman5515 ( $100 )
kramer1993 posts small blind [$1].
leo666 posts big blind [$2].
danman5515 posts big blind [$2].
** Dealing down cards **
Dealt to ME [ Kd Kh ]
ME raises [$8].
foldonriver1 folds.
danman5515 folds.
Wild23 calls [$8].
kramer1993 calls [$7].
leo666 calls [$6].

** Dealing Flop ** [ 6s, Td, 7s ] Certainly not an ideal flop for my hand but not too bad either.

kramer1993 checks.
leo666 checks.
ME bets [$35]. I bet pot hoping to take it down right there, perhaps a slightly larger bet here was in order with three others in the hand

Wild23 calls [$35]. Someone has other ideas. Possible could be on a flush draw or a pair with a straight draw or something like A10 or even two pair or a set. A shitload of hands where I could be in trouble or still in good shape.

kramer1993 folds.
leo666 folds.

** Dealing Turn ** [ 9c ] Pot 104.00 Well certainly not a card I was hoping to see. In a quandry. He has 105.00 left and I have him covered. I don't want to check if he is on some kind of draw or give him a chance to go all in here and face a tough call. I decide to bet 60.00. After thinking about this I wondered if going all in here was a better move than betting 60 because I was going to call his all in bet for another 45.00 if he made it. Who checks this turn here? Who goes all in? Who wagers 60.00? It is just a tough spot out of position with this board.

ME bets [$60].
>You have options at Get Lucky Table!.
Wild23 is all-In.
ME calls [$45.35].
** Dealing River ** [ Qh ]
ME shows [ Kd, Kh ] a pair of kings.

Wild23 doesn't show [ Th, Ks ] a pair of tens. The best of all possible hands I could be facing:) so it all worked out.

ME wins $312.7 from the main pot with a pair of kings.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Both the situations that you and Ice describe are bite the bullet hands. It is all based on what you know about how they play a hand that beats top pair in the previous hands, with no real read you are stuck either paying them off or scooping the pot. How have you seen them play overplay or trap previously leads you to the correct most of the time choice between most opponents.

With no read it is weak tight to lay down, if you are unsure the correct play is to put them all in, call all in every time. Obviously the converse of having a read is also true, that it then makes folding correct. This means that yahoos that just caught a real hand get paid should they have just got lucky like in Ice's case, or yahoos with trash like in Piers case get punished unless they river a 2-5 outer.

The best I can tell there is no good way to deal with this other than being properly funded for the game. It is the reason why poker is gambling :) These same guys will stack off against AK with KJ pushing preflop, you just got to roll with the punches and hope that you connect and they miss.

Of course a more solid player is exempt from this rule. There are a few at the site that I play once they are calling I assume they can beat a pair and KK just became 22.

Peace,
R.Dale
