Blind Defense

Postby Bob314 » Sun Dec 19, 2004 8:18 pm

Alright, I know that in a no limit cash game moves like raising to steal blinds are kind of silly and pointless to exersize frequently. I personally let the cards decide when I'm going to make a late position raise like this. However, sometimes I get stuck on the left of a player who will raise every time he is on the button or in the CO and there is 1 or 0 limpers in front of him and he will raise every single time. I believe that over defending your blinds is as pointless and can be as constly as always trying to steal them, so I usually let my cards decide when I do that too. How do some of you react to these players who will always raise with a variety of holdings in this position? What kind of cards do you defend with? I am hesitant to defend with any kind of semiweak-weak ace because that is an easy hand to raise with in late position to begin with and I don't want to end up having to worry about my kicker.

The real trouble here is when you do decide to defend by raising or calling what do you do when you hit the flop? I think you have to check-fold when you don't hit the kind of flop you are looking for, but how do you really make your opponent pay for what they are doing so that it will possibly slow them down in the future?

Speaking from pure inexperience here... ;)

I do not defend my blinds. When I'm in a blind, I treat the hand just like I'm in EP / UTG. As soon as I post those blinds, the money isn't mine any more; it's the pot's. If I have to commit chips to play a hand, it's going to be a hand that's worth chips to play, that simple. If someone wants to bet at me in hopes I'll fold, he better hope I don't have a playable hand to take his chips with.

As I gain more experience with the game, maybe that'll change. I imagine if I had such a great read on the blind stealer that I was 100% confident he was full of crap, I'd raise and raise big. But I haven't done that yet and I don't see doing it any time soon.

On the flip side, if I have the chips to cover it and there is at most 1 limper between the blinds and me in CO or OTB, I'll sometimes throw out a decent sized raise with any reasonably playable hand. I won't do this every time because I don't want to irk the guys whose blinds I'm after to reraise me in a fit of tilted rage. In the short while I've played, I've found this approach to be a fairly effective tool to help maintain my stack while waiting for a good hand to really play. It seems to work a heck of a lot better if you're holding one of the top 2 stacks at the table.

My blind play (and LP play with at most 1 limper) is almost the same as yours except that obviously I'll sometimes defend with a hand like K-Q. I was just wondering if anyone played it any differently, and was a little dissapointed not to get any responses on this one.

Unless someone is pounding my unmercifully, I just fold away and dont worry about it.
That normally doesnt happen at mid limits because it hardly ever gets folded to the cutoff or button.

Sometimes at $2/$4 NL and above it does happen. I fold until I get a hand I want to play and I reraise preflop. I dont flat call unless I have something like a mid pair that Im playing for a set just like I would in any position.

If you try to call a raise with KT or J9s, youre going to be out of position the entire hand and not know what to do when you miss the flop.

I welcome this type of predicable play, first off I dont protect my blinds any diffenetly agaisnt this player than I do against anyone else. I play the cards, compared to my stack one BB or SB is almost nothing compared to getting mixed up in a hand that you aren't strong in, especially because in the blinds you are always going to be playing this hand out of position. What I really want so see is the early postion limpers call him to showdown so I know what cards he is making this play with. Once I figure out what kind of cards he making this play with you can try to catch him.
