The Party Poker Difference

Postby kennyg » Mon Dec 20, 2004 1:26 pm

Party Poker $1/2 blinds $100 max buy-in

stacks
me= $100
enemy = $70

I'm dealt [Js][Jh] UTG. I raise to $8... enemy calls in LP.

FLOP pot $19
[Ts][6s][9h]

I bet $16, he raises to $32. He has about $30 left after the raise.

What does everyone do?

Do you have a read on this player at all? This is a tough one. At those tables I wouldn't be shocked if he had AT or Axs to have TP/TK or the nut flush draw. But that minimum raise on the flop also looks a lot like someone with a set. But if they really had the set, they also might wait until the turn to raise. With a coordinated board I think a flop raise would be more likely though.

A higher pair is also possible, since many people like to flat call raises with KK or AA.

I don't know, there is a reasonable chance you are ahead, but I'm not sure the chance is big enough. Even if he is on a draw he'll get there 1/3 of the time. And if he has TP/TK he still has five outs to beat you barring the board pairing.

I think this time I'm folding, and I'm going to be watching the player to see if I can get a bit more information on him....

A call here is completely out of the question. There are a lot of hands he could hold that have you beat but could obviously be raising in hopes of getting a free look at the turn and river.

I throw out a straight because I do not think he would play the nuts so fast.

AA, KK, QQ, TT, 99, 66, 78 suited, 9T suited have you slaughtered.

AK spades also gives him a lot of outs. All of these hands could be smooth called in late position.

If you held KK or AA I would definately put him in. In this case I would think a better situation will present itself and fold.

I'm all-in most of the time here. He will have AT, KT, or even QT more often than a set. QQ-AA is probably out of the question, since most Party players are not sophisticated enough to smooth-call raises PF with big pairs. He could have T9 but even then you have 5 outs. Only thing that kills you is a set and he's gonna have to show em to me in order for me to believe it.

I moved all-in...because of what I call the "Party Poker Difference"...they are morons.

He called instantly with K10o and I took it down.. That was the point I was trying to make with this hand. Party poker players are insane.

Looks like I am getting better at reading incredible morons. I would really play at Party but I hate everything about that site, from the interface to their ridiculous max 50xBB buy-in rule to their crapshoot SnGs and even the idiots who I just couldn't figure out how to play.

I was discussing the poker poker difference with my bro the other day. I have been playing a lot more live game lately and the difference between 2/3NL $100 buy in and a party poker table is incredible. In these live games I refuse to go go bust with TPTK, on party depensing who I'm playing against I'll play it like the nuts. I have given up trying to bluff at the $50 games at party, bluffing is irrelavent if noone knows how to fold.

I read him as AT (not the flush draw) trying to protect against flush draw. That sort of raise just screams 'protecting top pair'.

I think with a set he would have pushed all-in.

With a flush draw he would have called or pushed all-in (probable if nut flush with overcards)

With AA,KK or QQ I would have expected a pre-flop re-raise.

T9s is the other possibility (not so sure many players even at Party call 4xBB raise pre-flop with T9o).

Unless PT is teling me rock or passive player, I'm pushing all-in here.

Whenever I switch from Party to another site after earning out a bonus I usually drop about $100!

It's all about metagaming - I have adjusted to play against folks who call down to the river or go all-in with top pair mediocre kicker for 1000+ hands - it is best EV at Party but I shudder when I get caught in that mindset on other sites... it's a bit like the short-stack all-ins at PokerStars - my all in pre-flop betswhen I buy in with 40% of max buy-in get called 40% of the time!

I'm leaving Party again because of hands like this. The varience is just too high for me. I win/lose less money on 1/2 Royal Vegas games with $200 stacks playing 3 tables, then I do on Party (2 tables, $100 stacks.) You have to be able to adjust to the sheer lack of poker skill and nonsense that they do. It's just too much for me.

Excession, you wouldn't happen to play Magic: The Gathering would you? All this talk of metagaming has me curious...

of course - played MtG for 8 yrs - invented a deck called countersliver you may have heard of - was top 10 in UK at one point..

2 mtg players in top 10 at WSOP this year - I suspect the good MtG players are very adaptable with a lot of tounrey experience which makes them play out well in big tourneys

I've been playing for 7 so yeah, I've been around long enough to know of countersliver. If you've ever had some good GP or PT finishes I'd probably recognize your name 'cause I follow 'em pretty closely (although I've never played one myself 'cause I live in Alaska)
