Best Time To Play

Postby sammax71 » Wed Dec 22, 2004 3:07 pm

What time of day do other players tend to play. I'm really asking other players based in the UK. I've found that the only site that has tournaments constantly on the go is Party. Although I was a winner at Party I stopped playing there for a while because of their crazy blind structure. I just found that they increased too quickly and combined with a low starting stack (for $10 - $30) they were very volatile.

Anyway, I stopped playing there for a while and started playing at UB. I much preferred the blind structure and starting chips but I found if I went on there before 3pm I would struggle to get in a tourney.

My playing time is more restricted to mornings and afternoons so are there any other poker sites with a regular turnover of low buy in S&G's????????

I couldn't win at UB. I don't know why. I just break even at party. The best big site that I have found is PokerStars. I can only play in the evening CST during the week. I play from 9pm till midnight or so.

I only ever used to play $20 SnG's at UB and I felt that I had my best results there. It was just there was never enough action at the time of day I would play.

Since I've been back at Party I've only been playing the $10 tournaments. Reason 1 was to get back used to playing Party SnG's and reason 2 was because I hate to deposit money in poker sites and I only had an odd $18 in my Party account which I've managed to turn into $500 just playing $10 tournaments. I think maybe I will try to climb the buy ins at Party but I want to have a reasonable amount in back up. I know Nashvegas suggests having a minimum bankroll of $500 before playing the $20 SnG's but I don't think I will feel comfortable unless I have fifty buy ins behind me. So I'll stick to the 10's until I reach $1000 and then move up to the 20's.

I did try Poker Stars and I know this is a lame excuse but I didn't like the software. I only ever played a few cash games there and didn't really get into the SnG's.

The Avatars are pretty lame at Star's and they don't have a slider which sucks because I play in the dark alot and it is hard to see the key board to type in the amount. For a major site the play is pretty straight forward though. I make most of my money at BoDog and FullTilt MTT's. I like MTT's with 200 ppl not 2000. A $50 MTT with 50 players is a pretty good payday.

My hat is off to you for having the pactience to play that many $10 SnG's at Party. What is your ITM %?

I was beating $10 SnG at Party but I got bored with having to play so tight for so little gain. The $20 Party SnG is just as easy as the $10 one. I suggest playing it because of the rate of return. Play as long as your BR stays over say $500. If you drop below $500 go back down to the $10 one. Once you get back up to say $550 start playing the $20 game again.

I must admit I do have a very high patience level. I know my ITM% must be high but I can't give you a specific figure because I stopped using Pokertracker. Yes I know that is an absolute sin and I intend to start it up again. When I first got Pokertracker I felt that my game changed because I was trying harder to post good figures than just playing my game. I did get Pokertracker a long time ago and my game has definately improved 100%. Incidentally I just checked my old figures and I used to play the $30 tourney's and I was ITM 40% but there wasn't too many recorded (just under 100) and I'm sure that would be better now as my game is so much better now.

I'm going to take your advice and get to $550 and then try the 20's.

If you are living in the UK and playing in the $10-20 region, you should check out some of the cryptologic sites such as William Hill Poker, and perhaps also Ladbrokes poker. As european sites they're busy at the "peak" hours in europe and offer good SnG action and games going most of the time round the day. The quality is pretty soft. If you want an alternative, I like Pokerstars and find their tournaments very beatable, the playing standard up to $30 is well below that of the NL ring games and I just love the two table SnGs, as well as the forgiving stack sizes. UB have the toughest SnGs on the net AFAIK, I used to play the $5 ones many moons ago but wouldn't touch the games above $20 with a bargepole to be honest, there's so many better sites out there. Oh, I forgot Paradise - they offer very loose SnG action which might appeal to you but the crappy software and relatively small turnouts are a big downside for me.

In summary, check out Cryptologic, always a $10 or $20 game waiting for players, you can use an account in £ which is great for a UK player, and they give you £25 free for playing the first 5 hours of the month if you play the ring games (William Hill, TotalBet and UKBetting, all skins for the same set of tables, all offer this bonus currently).

Hope this helps.

I usually play at pokerroom.com, and have never had much trouble getting a game. The best thing that I like about there is that you start with $1500 in chips, even at the lower levels.
