How do you play JJ in EP?

Postby legendary loser » Wed Dec 22, 2004 11:04 pm

Lately I have been having problems raising with JJ in EP. This is on Party where the stacks are short. Usually w/ JJ I seem to either get 1 caller and win it on the flop or get called by QQ-AA and lose my stack when the board is low. The normal situation is I will raise to $2.50. Get called. Bet $5 on the 8 high flop and get called. If I check the turn, I'm giving away the pot. If I make any bet that is not showing weakness I will be pot committed. I have started to limp in EP w/ JJ to avoid this. Is this an usual play?

I almost always limp in EP with JJ. I win some nice pot when the flop is Txx and someone has AT or KT. If the flop has an overcard I just throw my cards in the muck and forget it. Actually I'll check raise the flop with an overcard sometimes depending on the action

I think when you consider limping with JJ in early position you need to consider two other factors that haven't already been mentioned: table texture and your table image.

If you are being seen as a rock at the table, I recommend going ahead and raising with JJ in EP. You probably aren't raising 'enough' in some player's minds already and you will likely be able to bluff on a board with a single overcard. In most games where I play JJ like this I win almost as many pots when the A or K comes as when it comes under me.

Also, the crazier the table is playing the more sense it makes to play JJ weakly; I recommend playing it stronger on tighter tables. You will be able to put your opponents on a hand easily on a table full of rocks.

At the looser Party low stakes tables it probably does make sense to make a limp with JJ in EP a good standard play.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd just like to add that once you limp with J-J you can only play it strongly as an overpair if you get to the flop unraised. In a raised pot you have to fear the overcards and play it carefully. You are more looking to flop a set in a raised pot than to get in a ton of money with your overpair.

If the pot is raised, Im playing it like 88. I play for a set unless I sense the raiser has AK and missed in which case I'll check raise him. I wont lead into him if the flop is rags because some people will raise with AK just like they would with KK
