Can you lay this down? another nl hand

Postby legendary loser » Sat Nov 13, 2004 4:58 pm

Heres another hand from today. $50 NL at a PS room. I have $100 and I'm in MP and call a raise to $2 w/ 77. The raiser has about $60. The flop is 2 7 10 rainbow. Pretty good flop. Raiser bets $2 and I call. The turn is an Ace. The perfect card if he has AK. He leads out for $3 and I re-raise to $8. He re-raises to $16. I think about going all in, but decide just to call. River is a 10. Initially I get excited, and then I get the feeling he might have A10. He throws out a $20 bet. I call and he has A10. Do you go for the raise on the turn? Or just call? Also, can you make the fold on the river or is this just one of those unlucky hands.

against a 4x BB raise, there's no way i'm putting the raiser on A10. AK seems more likely. AA wouldn't suprise me either - but if that's the case then so be it.

Personally, i'm losing my entire stack on this hand. You're flop play was good. His smaller bet would make me think he wasn't too strong, and i wouldn't want to push him off a hand like AK just yet. the turn, once he reraises you, i'm pushing in. Once again, if he's got AA, then oh well. If i lose a guy holding onto AK, then oh well. He's shown aggression in the hand, and i'd feel somewhat confident that i'd be called if i reraised all in.

Either way, you lost much less than i would have on this hand, and unless you put him on AA the entire way, i don't see how you can possibly fold it. A10 especialy just doesn't seem like a likely hand for a 4x BB raise.

You shouldve lost your stack in that hand. That fact that you didnt tells me that you arent making enough money on your monster hands.
When he reraised you at the turn, I wouldve gone all in. If I lose, I lose. Believe me, you'll win more money playing that way.

Three things about the hand.

1. I like your flop call. He could easily be betting an unimproved AK or AQ so I wouldn't wanna raise here and reveal the strength of my hand. Plus his weak bet doesn't look like he's got an overpair, which is what you want him to have ideally.

2. On the turn I think you can raise a little bit more. Based on his flop play, it didn't look like he had an overpair (which he would bet more to protect), so the odds are VERY good that he just hit that Ace. Furthermore, since he raised preflop, he's got a paint kicker to go along with the ace in all likelyhood. I would come in here and raise it $10 looking to get him pot-commited with his AK. Most players here will definately not lay down the AK and might even re-raise you with it. Once you are re-raised, I don't think you can be too scared of AA or TT. You will be ahead the majority of the time, and his play still looks like AK. I push here 90% of the time.

3. I would actually push here again. It looks like your opponent's $20 bet is a small bet in comparison to the pot. Now I'm not sure what the stack sizes were, but this looks like what Iceman commonly refers to as the blocking bet. If he had at least a $40 stack before making the bet, then the $20 bet is probably an indication of a value bet. You beat every raising hand but AA and TT. If he's got quads, then so be it. If he has Aces full, then so be it. 90% of the time you are gonna have him beat. You can't be afraid to lose your stack.

I had every intention of raising all in on, on the river, but I PUT him on A10. His re-raise on the turn screamed two pair more than AK to me. I think someone mentioned that they wouldn't put someone raising w/ A10, but you can't forget this is only a $50 room and its the weekend...so a lot more fishes were out. Anyway...had I gone all in on the turn and lost, I wouldn't have had a problem since I was a favorite, however when the board paired I got a bad feeling and I was right. As a side note, the player had an additional $20 after his bet on the river.

Another note about what ice said about not maximizing premium hands. This is definetely a leak of mine, but I think in a little bit of the reverse. I try to push too many mediocre hands too hard(such as the JJ & 1010 hands I posted previously) and end up making calls/bets that I shouldn't be making. The hand above may be a result of me trying to fix that.
