Always nice to welcome another Real Poker Player (limiteer) to the site.

Good luck and hope to see your hands in the limit section.
I do not think, therefore I am not.

Hi

Are you actually one of the few Scottish people living in Edinburgh? I had friends at Uni there and as a result have spent an inordinate amount of time there, worked a festival there at Potterow/Hell.

Anyway, in glory days of the crypto sites before bonus whoring drove away all the action it was possible to make quite a lot playing 1/2 limit, especially during the afternoon for some reason, I think the connection to the bookies sites meant that 'proper' gamblers were on, rather than 3%VSIP'ers.

Welcome!

Thanks very much to everyone for the welcome and yes I‘m a genuine Edinburgh person being born just down the road from the Castle and I remember these glory crypto days as well as I hardly knew what I was doing yet somehow kept on winning as I was the ‘least bad’ player out there.
Releasing the new software with the ‘Micro-limits’ spelt the end of easy money for the £1/£2 limit player.

My favourite sort of night: No system problems: a nice spread of people at the table making for interesting games and thoughtful hands; no silly wee boys insulting each other in the chat box and another winning evening though nothing like last nights feast.

Folded [Qc] [Qs] in late position to a player who raised before the flop…how mad was that except the stats showed this absolute Rock had only raised 1/193 times (wonder what that was with  ) so he just had to have had [Ah] [Ad] or [Kh] [Kd] maybe. Unfortunately the Big Blind folded on the flop so never did get to find out.

Tough work on the 40th birthday organising front… I do love my city but it just so busy with the tourists at the moment that every trip up town is a born adventure.

Tonight have to concentrate on getting more to grips with PT as the information it provides in the long run will be invaluable but I’d estimate you would need 25,000- 50,000 hands for meaningful positional information.

Also managed to lose around £20 today without even playing which is a good trick if you can manage it  due to £/US$ exchange rate fluctuations which is another reason for cashing out regularly if you are not playing on a particular site for a while.

Decided to step up a level on UB tonight and play some $3/$6 limit and found it quite tough though managed to break even though would have to admit this was more due to getting a slightly better than average run of cards.

Made one bad misread when holding [Qs] [Qh] against a very tight player who had limped in from very early postion and then re raised with the board showing [Tc] [2c] [5d].

He hadn't raised before the flop so didn't have a large pocket pair and he would have flat called with [Th] [Ts] in order to raise later and just wouldn't have played [5d] [5h] or [2c] [2s] or [Ah] [Ts] .

Turn was [8c] and should have just folded here as he just had to be on the flush draw and sure enough lost to [Qc] [Kc] .

Overall though played quite well against what was a very tough table with no fish, calling stations or 'showdown muppets' for miles but that level is quite stressful and why play outwith your limits when you are consistently winning elsewhere and having more enjoyment and fun watching the other players and their bizarre plays.

Managed to find a 40th birthday party venue but the function manager wasn't around and neither the Australian/Polish/ English or Scandinavian waitresses were allowed to process the deposit.
Ever felt like a being tourist in your own city

However it's not all bad at festival time and went to see a fringe show last night:
A card magician called Jerry Sadowitch and the sleight of hand and dexterity that he showed must have involved years of practice and certainly not a man to sit down at a card table with

Lost last night for the first time in 10 days though only about 8 BB but given the best hand I received all night was [Qc] [Qh] for 1/306 hands then I’m claiming last night as a moral victory.

It was a very strange session as never once did I have a flush draw or a straight draw and no one sucked out on me or gave me a bad beat and nor was I involved in anything resembling a big pot.

Instead it was a collection of win a small pot with top pair or lose a small pot to top pair (higher kicker) or the occasional two pair or trips and in between constantly hitting the Fold button.
This was most frustrating  as it was quite a weak table but found it hard to get involved.

Most amusing quote of the night was when someone lost a big pot and he said ‘I really hate this site (William Hill’s) so I’m away to play on Interpoker’.

Bless him I used to think like that as well and it took me ages to work it out.

Off to more shows tonight so probably no poker and hope to find someone at Café Royal to take the 40th birthday deposit money…How hard is that going to be.

Back on the winning trail and after only getting [Qh] [Qs] once in a whole evening:... then the following day in the space of 6 hands I get [Ah] [Ad] and then [Kd] [Kh] twice and win with them every time.

I've no doubt that any luck factor in poker will even itself out and good players win and bad players lose and fortunately this month I have certainly had a lot of good luck and I hope have made a lot of good plays and the stats seem to back that up with now sitting on 7.9 BB/100.

The downturn though has to happen...it's just inevitable as that sort of win rate can't be sustained but I'm in no rush

Pleasantly surprised to receive a $300 dollar bonus from Interpoker (via my Poker listings sign on for playing 3,000 raked hands although I have no idea how I received this so quickly as my count made it around 1,900 but poker bonuses seem to live in a complete world of there own.

Nice night in the city last night lots of tourists (especially the eye candy  ) and enjoyed the fringe show though getting home at 1.30 am was a bit late and my injured ankle was aching by the time I got home.

Ligament damage really is the pits  but the $2/$4 table and all these pocket kings cheered me up though Interpoker are doing a $10 promotion for [Kh] [Kd] this weekend so I was a few hours to early.

Away to Falkirk now to see Hibs play in what should be a very interesting football match and then on to Glasgow for the evening to meet a Finnish girl so probably no poker tonight

It's been a great weekend Poker and otherwise but despite having an excellent month so far I have decided to do a little tweaking to my game as I feel my VPI$P % at 19% is a little high.

By choice I am happy to get involved with the marginal hands as I enjoy the challenge and the thought process involved and this month the 'marginals have mostly succeeded hence the 7.10/BB/100 hands return however I think I will tighten very slightly and look to get the VP$IP down by a % point to between 17.5%-18.5% over the next month or so.

Last night I came across a fascinating opponent who had a VP$IP% of 5.25% and an agression factor of 5.9

Basically he must just play about 6 hands [Ah] [Ad] , [Kh] [Kd] , [Qc] [Qs] , [Jh] [Jd] and [Ah] [Kd] and maybe [Ah] [Qs] suited or otherwise and then just plays them to the flop no matter what.

He was very difficult to play against as you had to put him on a very high hand and unless you got something on the flop you had to fold.
Won a nice pot with [5h] [5h] out of the BB when he had [Ah] [Kd] and checked him down but lost with [9d] [9h] to [Qc] [Qs]
Each play really became a 50/50 race.

I guess he must multi table but his fingers must be sore from all that folding and he does seem to win overall so good luck to him.

Not much I could have done about last night [Ah] [Ad] or [Kh] [Kd] twice and no one wanted to play and all I won was the blinds which is very frustrating  especially as I had already lost to flushes and straights and trips.

I was beginning to go on tilt when I bet into a made flush with my straight and knew there and then it was time to call it a day  before things got worse as they usually do in this situation.

Overall lost about 30BB which doesn't really dent this months profits but it is still annoying as I had being playing well but last night brought me back to earth a little.

Also last night went to see Tao :The Martial art of the Drum (from Japan) and the show was tremendous with the power, phyisque and vitality of the performers amptly complimented by the atmospheric venue.

Wonder if any of them play poker

Spent this morning restructuring my playable hands list and took out the [9h] [8h] and [Th] [8h] connectors and moved a few hands down from playable in middle position to late position only.

This should be enough to drop my VPI$P down by 0.5%-1.0% which in turn makes it easier to multitable without having so many marginal cards to play and think about.

Ever get the feeling that you had been here before.

Last night was exactly the same as the night before but much worse as my [Ah] [Ad] , [Kh] [Kd] lost 3 times when pocket [4c] [4h] hit their set.
Adding this to the flush and straight draw outs and a quite comical four capped [6c] [4h] offsuit hitting two pair then last night was abruptly cut short.

It’s called variance and I was expecting this as you really can’t expect to win 10+ days on the bounce and I am still well ahead of my monthly target of 3BB/100.

Observed an very interesting player last night who seemed at first to me to be rather loose and then over the next hour he seemd to tighten up.
From his play you could see he knew what he was doing and while it may have been the run of cards it seemd to me he was adapting his play for the ever changing table conditions which veered from the very tight to maniac city.
Very impressed

Enjoying reviewing my PT stats but the stats while relevant don’t really seem to have that much meaning until the sample size is far greater.

Nice to have an evening away from the city and the Kulture and wrote a nice financial article for the Hibs web site which generated nearly 1,000 reads and a lot of interesting debate.

The slump continues  but only by a small amount though that is 3 days in a row I have lost however at 4.5BB/100 then I am still smiling  but I did add to my own problems with a stubborn refusual to lay down [Qs] [Qd] when everything indicated [Ah] [Ad] or the [Kh] [Kd] which was duly delivered.

Tonight will have to go through PT and do some review and analyisis: not of my own play as the sample is still to small but that of some of my opponents as I am finding that on UB over the last few days some of the names have been very familiar and with the very tight players then I should be able to get a better feel for their raising hands.

I can't say though I'm enjoying losing and hope it ends soon and I think I will drop a limit tonight just to get back to basics :?

Back to winning again albeit not very much at all ie $5 but it beats losing though not much of a return for 3 hours toil .

However unlike the previous night I was much happier with my play with two bluffs taking down very decent sized pots especially after studying the two players I was bluffing against throughout the evening and I just knew they had nothing.

Obviously you only say that when the bluff succeeds.

The rest of the night was frustrating due to the number of suck outs in some very large pots but there is just nothing you can do but raise and raise again to get people out of pots and if [3h] is the river card to make a miraculous gut shot then all you can do is smile manfully and kick the cat

This evening I will have to spend sometime getting out a European atlas.
I know where the Ukraine is but where is Dnip@@@@@@ and how do you get there and what is the currency.

Hibernian FC (SCOTLAND) v FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk (UKRAINE)

This European football tie is going to be an adventure into the unknown and a exercise in logistics as ex Soviet countries are not easy to travel to but look forward to the adventure.

Translation might be a starting point

I think it means raise don't fold and playing [4c] [6d] against a reraise is not a recommended course of action.

A nice solid winning weekend with some huge pots won and some huge pots lost all in the space of a few hands where my full boat lost to quads and then my straight flush beat someone else's full boat

Also within that 20 hand period were [Ah] [Ad] and [Qh] [Qs] one of which was lost and one of which was drawn as up against another [Qc] [Qd]

Not an evening for the faint hearted but still managing to keep in line for 3BB/100 for the month as presently at 3.8 and will be delighted if I can maintain this with a few days to go.

Congratulations as well to my football team (Hibernian) who defeated Rangers the Scottish champions 0-3 on their own patch and sets up nicely for our European adventure to the deepest Ukraine. :D

Poker Tracker really does bring home to you how strange other players play can be.

Last night the stats showed up a player who had now played 9 hours at around 68 %VP$IP and who had played around 450 hands and not surprisingly was sitting on a losing 4BB/100.

As these stats only indicated the time when he had played simultaneously to myself then it is probable his stats are far worse.
He must lose both medium term and long term with the odd short term win as a 68% VPIP is completely unsustainable for winning play.

I was reraising him and trying to isolate him for a one on one with as little as [Ah] [9d] and 3/4 times I had the best hand and won the pot.

These hands turned what would have been a losing session into quite a respectable winning session :)
Winning poker so often is not about playing well but just playing better than your opponents and if they are really bad then you just have to play simple and safe.

So what does he get out of playing poker :?: and do I really care
