Actually, the string bet rule is a handy thing to know, if you don't already.
Basically, if you shove a certain amount of chips across the line without announcing, you can't shove any more in. It's not a big deal, really, except on big bets, where it's just difficult to move three stacks of $100 across the line at the same time (we're usually playing with $5 chips--with the $25 chips, it's easier).
In light of all that, I just make a practice of always announcing my exact betting quantity before starting to move any chips out there. Verbal is binding, so you don't have to worry about it if you've announced your bet.
