What the heck did this guy have?

Postby SebQtaneus » Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:44 pm

He mucked after he lost and when I tried to play it back in PT it wouldn't show me what he mucked. I'm still new to this Limit stuff so does anybody have a good idea of what he was betting with? I'm guessing it was AA or KK but would like some input on this and I'm sure you Limit experts can probably put this guy on an exact hand for me. :D I only wish this had been a NL table, I'd have made a bundle!!! As I look back on it now, if I'd have check raised him on the turn, I might have gotten another BB out of him but like I said I'm still new to this limit stuff.

I don't understand why you check-raised your set on the flop. You have a MONSTER hand, yet you want everyone else to fold already?

Since you were in such an early position, I would have just led out with a bet. You want more bets in the pot when you have a huge equity edge, like here. If he re-raises you and no one else calls, then just call and check-raise him on the turn. It's better to gain an extra BB than an extra SB.

It would make no sense to check-raise the flop, cap it heads-up, and then check the turn. Only the most foolish of players would bet that turn. That's why I argued for a call if it's heads-up.

I don't think any of us can narrow his holdings down to a single hand. You should try to narrow their holdings down to a range of hands - not just a single hand. He probably had AQ, KQ (if he's really aggressive), or KK+. Those would be my guesses by how he played the hand.

You're right about the flop check raise in that it probably wasn't the smartest thing to do but up to that point it seemed like everytime I hit a set and bet out, everyone would fold. This way I figured if I check raised, he would have to at least call it (thats the way it felt at the time) and I would finally get a little bit of a pot built before he folded. As it turned out he had a hand he was proud of and we ended up capping it on the flop anyway. Yes, it would have been nicer to cap it on the turn instead but like I said, I'm still new to this limit stuff and I was tired of not getting any kind of action whatsoever on my flopped sets. The only other time I got action on a flopped set that session was when my other set of 7's got beat by a set of Q's.

Has anyone given thought to him having AK? Either he has AK or is playing one of the hands that EP9 suggested, and should be tagged for your buddy list immediately.

The only hands I can even fathom him playing that hard are AK, AQ, or KJ. He's in the CO, with the BB and 2 limpers. He may have open-raised with KJ, and flopped the straight draw. AK makes a little sense, but he would've popped you on the turn when his straight came out. AQ s a possibility, and maybe he decided to slow down after you capped the flop. KK is also certainly possible--overcards to the board, and he slowed down when 3-to-a-straight came on the turn.

Yeah... I discounted AK because he didn't pop him on the turn, and the aggression on the flop seemed beyond a "free card play". I also discounted nearly any hand containing a J, since many people would raise you when they hit their trips on the river.
