I'm hemorrhaging money from the blinds

Postby hackerrus » Tue Sep 20, 2005 7:40 pm

Hi, new to this board. Have been playing and reading poker books for about 2 months and a half.
I have a total of 3100 hands at 2/4. I know it's a small sample, but I'm clueless in the blinds. I'm pretty sure I did fine in the blinds at .5/1 and 1/2, because I had a >2BB/100 over about 10000. Though I didn't have PT, so I can't be sure.

My 2/4 stats:

Total
3100 hands
VPIP 13.72
PFR 5.9
AF 2.37
W$WSF 30.8
WTSD 30
W$SD 55
(1.26)BB/100

Not in the blind:
2387 hands
BB/hand = .08

BB
365 hands
VPIP 14.8
WWSF 24
WTSD 21
W$SD 48
Folded to steal 77%
(.38)BBhand

SB
368 hands
VPIP 25.8
WWSF 24
WTSD 28.7
W$SD 33
Folded to steal 76%
(.26)BB/hand -slightly worse than if I had folded every hand!

Summary:
I've won 191 BB out of the blinds and lost 233 in the blinds. I heard somewhere that a decent player is suposed to only lose about .25BB/hand .10BB/hand from the BB and SB, respectively. If I had thoses numbers, I would have lost 100 less BB from the blinds, giving me a 2BB/100 hand profit.

Hope this isn't too long.

I have several post about blind defense on here if you search my name. Also Tiburon has some info on his blog that you can find in his journal. As you said you are losing alot more than you need to be losing. You should really be shooting for under -0.20 BB/100 from the BB and -0.1 BB/100 or less from SB. I can tell you right now you are folding too much from steals when it will be Heads Up. You will have to address this problem and hopefully some of my previous post will help you to do that.

Also, it should be noted that 3100 hands is a *really* small sample size, so not necessarily indicative of what your long term results would be. The best thing to do is examine/post some of your hands to try to figure out where you're going wrong (if at all).

Yeah, I think I play the right hands from the SB -- small pairs if I'm getting 5:1 and suited connectors if I'm getting several limpers and big offsuit cards. I think my probems are mainly post-flop. A lot of times i'll complete against 1 or 2 limpers and if I don't hit, I check and he auto-bets in LP and I fold. Another situation is when I raise with a big hand like AK or AQ against 1 or 2 opponents (if there are more I usually respect the raise) and a J94 or so flop, I bet, am raised. What now? How often do you defend your SB if it's 1/2 a small bet? I fold both my SB and BB to steals 80% of the time, including 80% HU when in the BB.

Here's an example: In this one it's pretty obvious I should have been aggressive because the flop was unlikely to have helped him unless he limped a medium pair. But what if it's T32 instead?

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [Ad], [Js].
UTG calls, 3 folds, MP3 calls, 3 folds, Hero checks.

Flop: (3.50 SB) [3s], [2d], [3h] (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks, MP3 bets, Hero folds, UTG folds.

Final Pot: 2.25 BB
