Ace-high vs the triple lead-out

Postby TightWad » Wed Sep 28, 2005 11:38 am

Okay, I know, I KNOW I call with ace-high too much. I really have been cutting back on it, but this betting pattern really just confused me. What do you put my opponent on and how would you play out the hand?

Party Poker 3/6 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: TW is MP3 with [As], [Kc].
4 folds, TW raises, 2 folds, SB calls, 1 fold.

Flop: (5 SB) [2d], [9s], [Jd] (2 players)
SB bets, TW raises, SB calls.

Turn: (4.50 BB) [6s] (2 players)
SB bets, TW raises, SB calls.

River: (8.50 BB) [8h] (2 players)
SB bets, TW calls.

Final Pot: 10.50 BB

Mecos, please be gentle

Well, its hard to put your opponent on a particular hand, since there are so many draws there and also, cards on the board that can very possibly make a pair. He could just as easily have a straight or a flush draw as a made hand.

YOu are right about the betting pattern being strange though, because when someones got the J or even the 9, i would expect a checkraise rather than a weak liead, and as i have said alot of times, i have no respect for the weak lead, and i am more inclined to raise the flop and lead the turn if someone does that.

The weak lead, to me, is often used as a way to find out where your at when you have a really shitty hand for cheap, and/or take down the pot on a semibluff at minimal cost (a CR being the costliy way to try and do that) Most people dont have the cajones to CR/lead the turn with something like [8h] [Td] here- but if you wanna mize a pot, then thats how you should do it IMHO.

By the way the hand shookdown in the end, i am going to give him credit for either (a) a busted diamond draw or (b) QT, and you lost on the river when the 8 got there. If he is a real douchenozzle, he might play a 9 like this, but i doubt it. I say- one of two draws, either the one that got there or the one that didnt.

If he had 8T or a diamond draw that ended up making a shitty pair on the end, my guess is that he'd check it instead of value betting on the end. THat bet on the end is one of two things probably, either a big hand (presumably one that just got there) or a busted draw.

I am seriously going to feel retarded if he had something stupid and obvious like JQ by the way, which is probably what he had.

Take this for what it's worth. I'm really new to this but I'd like to contribute if at all possible.:D

After looking at the entire hand I put him on a Set or AJ. Just looking at the flop and turn, I would have folded after he bet into me on the turn and saved the 3 BB's you spent raising him the 2nd time and calling the river. You only had 2 BB's into the pot at that point with nothing better than a backdoor straight draw.

You're gonna feel retarded if he had something stupid and obvious like QJ? What about me, the guy who called him down!?

He did, in fact, have AJ so I succesfully spewed off 4 big bets post flop while drawing to 3 outs  But based on this pattern, I really thought there was a good chance that his range of hands included a diamond draw or a straight draw (T8, QT or maybe KQ for the gutter/overs). The river kinda sucks cause now both T8 and QT got there, so now I'm just takin 9.5:1 and PRAYING that he has the ol' flush draw that didn't get there.

Ah well, if nothing else I feel a little better knowing that your read on the situation was fairly similar to mine...but I'd still like to know how you would've played? Would you have raised the turn bet, or just folded up? And do you think it's worth hoping that he has a missed flush draw and calling the river?
