6-max, semi-bluff re-raising turn after donked

Postby EscapePlan9 » Sun Oct 02, 2005 7:09 pm

Party Poker 0.50/1 Hold'em (6 max, 6 handed)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [Ac], [7c].
2 folds, CO calls, Hero raises, 2 folds, CO calls.

Flop: (5.50 SB) [5h], [8c], [Qs] (2 players)
CO checks, Hero bets, CO calls.

Turn: (3.75 BB) [6h] (2 players)
CO bets, Hero raises, CO folds.

Final Pot: 6.75 BB

Results in white below:
No showdown. Hero wins 6.75 BB.

The only way his donk-bet would make sense was if he also was semi-bluffing (otherwise, he's bluffing here or has a low pair and wants to bet me out). I knew I wasn't going to fold my OESD, so I wanted to see how he responded to my raise. I have no idea if this is a +EV move in the long run, but it worked here I guess.

Yeah when this one works, its an 'advanced play'. When the godawful mizor that bet his 6 that he caught on the turn decides to call you down all the way and you miss, then its a chip spew.

More often than not when you face a donkbet in a headsup situation like that with an OESD and one overcard, the raise is a good move, particularly if you think the bettor is capable of folding hands.

Would you have fired the last barrel if he called the turn though?

Hooray, a response! I was beginning to think everyone in this forum had died a slow painful death without notifying me.

I should have added the player's stats. Over the course of 38 hands (very small sample) he had 73 VP$IP, 10% PFR, 33% WtSD and neutrally aggressive. During the session I noticed he wasn't a ridiculous calling station. That was one of the biggest reasons I tried this play.

I would have checked the river UI. He isn't going to call a bet with a busted draw (due to his WtSD), and he probably won't fold if he's paired up by the turn (and called the turn raise).

Yeah, in those situations (and beleive me, i make this play probably more than i should) i am always torn between firing the last barrell, or checking behind. I think that if you fire the last one, you may get a small pair / busted draw hand to muck. Of course, most times if hes calling you on the turn hes calling the river, but then when the pot gets that big, the river bet doesnt have to win that often to be a proper one right?

I dunno, Id like to get some input on what people think about checking a hand like that UI when you made the turn raise play. Also, would you be more inclined to bet it if you had something like [7h] [3h], i.e. a hand that had no hope at all of winning if shown down, as opposed to an ace high busted draw, which is obviously the 'nut-busted-draw' if you will, that beats other busted draws?

Personally I like the turn raise, and probably wouldn't bet the river unimproved with A7s. At the levels that EP9 and I play at, I don't think you're generally gonna get a small pair to fold the river if he calls the turn. If he has something like 75, he's still probably gonna convince himself to pay one more bet even if he misses his outs. If I did have a weaker draw (though of course unlike MK I probably wouldn't be in with 73soooted :D), I think I would probably fire one last shot at the river.
